Moving home and taking existing phone number to new address

… does BT charge you for the pleasure of doing so? I’m only moving a mile and a half down the road and have just filled in the “Moving Home” form on BT’s website - it mentioned that I may be charged for it but at no point gave any pricing details.

Oh, and yes I will be in ADSL range at last

TBH I’m not all that bothered about downloading loads of p2p stuff, I really want it for keeping my home server/pc’s/laptop up-to-date, VPN to work etc…

If the new house has an existing phone line and internal connection box then taking your number with you is free.

I fell slightly foul of this as the previous owner removed the internal box and all the cabling back to where it entered the house

BT were kind enough to slap a new box in FOC as I was having a 2nd line installed at the same time.

As far as I know the internal wiring is still all intact… I’m going to take another look round it early next week to measure up for new furniture etc so will investigate further.

I also get an attached garage, complete with mains supply… somewhere cool to keep some boxen that the missus won’t know about

Attached garage, sweet! I’d love one of those, ideal for all those crunchers!

… and somewhere to hide from the missus under the excuse of “giving the car an oil change” etc… (although I have no idea how to do one of those)

Hahahaha… :chuckle:

I’m sure you don’t really feel the need to hide from your missus.

Last time I moved litterally across the road, BT charged me £35 to keep the same number. If I took a different number they allocated it wouldn’t have cost anything.

When I moved again a bit further (same area code, different exchange) they couldn’t let me keep the number, seems they’re attached to the exchange.

Edit: Forgot to say this was many years ago, so things can and probably have changed since.
