And i’m not trying to get my post count up, ya tarts…
At the last MOJO’s, the point was raised about funding future kit for the network, and maybe getting everyone who turns up to chuck a few quid in the hat. This at the time went down well.
SO… this is what we need to aim for, assuming that those attending are all in favour.
Currently on e-bay, there have been advertised 24 port gigabit switches for about $500 (US dollars), assuming that these are bus linkable, we should be accumulating funds so that by/before the end of this year we are in a position to go that route.
Prices for this kit is falling fast, so thats in our favour , the exchange rate is another bonus - assuming it stays like it is for a while, and maybe by the time we get there , 48 port switches will be in our price range. But this is the direction we need to move towards. If we could ultimately accomodate 48 or 60 ports of gigabit, then we would have screamer of a network, and thats to everyones benefit.
Once the kit is purchased then we’d have a decent network until gigabit got to be old fart technology - hopefully a few years.
The question remains how much we put in the hat, Going on a Per PC basis … not Per Person, seems the fairest way to go.
The longer the timeframe , the cheaper it gets , but some balance is needed here and that needs to be a decision made by ALL of us.
To get the ball rolling, I’m proposing that for every PC attending, a fiver should go in the kitty. that would stack up to about £150 - £200 per venue. Thats a good chunk towards the goal. Means we should be somewhere close by the latter half of the year to buy Gigabit Kit.
Cash should be held by Mojo, and totals posted.
OK flame me, kill me, grill me … but the debate is open.

Who owns the kit? When it all ends, what happens to it? Nothing lasts forever, especially seti teams.
I can see problems in the future when folk leave the team or whatever. Could be fair if you go to every lan, maybe not so fair if you don’t.
Just a thought…
I assumed folk who were advantaged enough to have the appropriate kit just fetched it along, out of the kindness of their heart.
I’m not a tight-wad, but I see arguments in the future with this one.

No charge is made for sleeping space unless you want the
luxuary of a room leccy is free… tech support is free
Mojo has allready invested a lot of money into the TPR server
for us lot.
We all have lots of fun at the end of the day and its not
just about the SETI Team but a general get together of
friends i.e. Dezyboy and other also from Digi-D included
who are non TPR.
I’m sure all normal regulars will have no issues with a small
donation with maybe Mojo being the owner of the Kit as such.

I think I can speak for Dezy and say AYE from us, and probably from Dr Zoidberg too.
I am happy to think of it as a donation to Mr & Mrs Mojo for their hospitality, including coffees etc and if they would just happen to like to buy some kit with that donation, so be it.
