i forgot to ask…
are these computers Shelfed? or in Full Cases?
Shelved, and all running fine with a 15" deskfan on lowest setting at the moment. Fan blows directly over the boards out the eaves, all psu exhaust fans point the same way, getting the hot air out, I found trying to pull in cool air was a waste of time, let the natural pressure do that from the other eaves. There are two chimneys, both used
If I do go sell current and loads of those semprons boxes, makes the farm a bit more moveable for the future, don’t think the shelving unit fits back through the hatch.
There are some pics about somewhere on here … (watch the birdie, edit coming when I find them)
setup is not that different from this, there are only two case left to the left of the shelves, the ones on the right have had facelifts and new kit as well since those pics.

it’s here, a bit tricky to get the cpu in, it’s crunching already, 100% load, case fan is inaudible and cpu fans spins for about 30seconds every five minutes
I think I’ve found my solution.
DT.
what you on DT?
oops wrong thread  between this one and the one in crunchers cafe, I’m all confussedled
Ordered and received a Sempron 2800, 512Mb ram and a Asus Barebone system, Vintage-AE. Attracted to this approach as makes the kit more saleable when future upgrades. To get best dosh on current kit, buying cases and selling as full rigs has been more successfull.
Now to drape a diskless cable down to the office from the loft  On first go, can’t find a pxe image for sis190 nic
DT.
Sounds good.
What kind of benchmarks is it? Guess if your running Folding you wont really have any?
OK, the lazy toe rag method, all I’ve done is take the HD out the machine after a drivers strip and then put in and :xfinger: after taking an image of the disk.
Before
nforce2 ultra chipset, barton 2500m @208fsb water cooled, 2x256 Twinmox 3200
Now
The Asus barebone system, sempron 2800 (no overclocking options in bios), 512 single stick elixir 3200.
Benefits, dead easy to install, and mighty quiet, the sempron I would guess is taking less power overall with the cool and quiet switching off the cpu fan and controlling the case fan to 1000rpm. The heat you normally feel out the case fan and psu just isn’t there, which is what I need. I reckon the noise level is less than my laptop when I have that working hard or crunching (all the time
)

So it seems to be a good deal…less heat given off, less power consumed and about the same amount of omph…
Sounds good. A cheaper chip for farm’s than the Opteron?
got to be close, but I’d need at least five of these to come close the a dual chip, four core opty, maybe more.
DT.
I am impressed with the lack of heat ouput form the Opeteron 165, and even water cooling doesn’t seem to get much more out of them. But who could complain on a 1.8 to 2.3 Ghz overclock on air cooling? I get about 0.15 Ghz more maybe out of water cooling them. I suppose there may be more in there but I can be bothered to tweak the last little bit out of them I got the Opteron 170 up to about 2.65 Ghz on water, but am comfortable running it 2.55 Ghz with a bit less voltage.
I guess the point of this is they put out much less heat than a Barton XP2500 OC. The air discharge from the case is just luke warm. and the WC ones hold well below 40C operating.
hm, the dual-core X2 3800+ are coming down in price, expensive still, yeah but might compete in heat/electricity and total cost ?
Mine Asrock s939 mATX (cheapest there was) board has dual channel memory and takes old AGP cards and have some o/c options, no overvolting though.
Runs cool and happily with stock cooler and vcore at 2.4 and is very fast:D
Asrock 939A8X-M… Ali M1689 chipset …hasn’t crapped out yet:p
Just an idea… but if you make a sky light that can be opend and closed one big enough fo fresh air to circulate what u could then do is set up fans to blow while the window is open kind of like a giant case for your PC but also to save energy if you used solar panels for the fans they would only go on when the sun is shining threfore cutting cost and making it more practical.
i have no idea how much somthing like that would cost but i think it would e effective and not so difficult to make ourself as a roof only consists of materials like water proofing and tiles then removing selected tiles and cutting away the water proofing ect building a box frame for a window and redoing the waterproofing and tiles.
sounds easy but is not. best get me to do it
