another way to look at it … people who are new to crunching - and probably need help setting clients up - can get instant access to IRC where they can be talked through the process
… same goes for linux issues/problems, quick easy access to “online” help
it’s not just for Gamers and idle chit chat, it could also prove to be a positive resource
Well i have never really contributed to the forums in the way of money.
Altho i have used the affiliate links once or twice.
so really the money has nothing to do with me.
however,
the boards seem perfect to me and DT does a bang up job with them.
as for the chat client i think its fine TBH.
like you said its hosted by damski and its free.(if i have that correct).
so if it aint broke dont fix it.
maybe the money could be used later on for a more worthwhile project.
I dont have any ideas myself.
but just my thoughts on the matter
If you want IRC to be part ot TPR and be TPR sponsored, then say so. If you do I will have to stop my affiliation as it is un-policable and may be libelous or illegal in it’s content.
We had this arguement a long time ago and it was decided that the IRC channel was not affiliated for this reason. You fund it you are affiliated.
As far as me voicing my opinion, this will be the last time I do so as it seems to have little value to you Miss Hids, CYA! When I hit 1.5 mill in Rosetta I will be gone from here, I promied Nightlord I would stick it out and so I will. That race was suppose to raise up some interest in DC, I consider it a failed attempt.
I don’t need to be treated with such a shabby respones! There are too many other places that respect there members comments to receive a reply with such a tone.
Personally I think this place has been going the down wrong road for quite a while. Have fun with you chat rooms and gaming, If you ever decide to do serious DC stuff again let me know, you will be able to find me. The only reason TPR even shows up on any of the DC stats is because a handful of die hards continue to seriously participate. If you took Bursley, Nightlord, Juggy and myself (and a couple others) pulled the plug, this place would be an also ran team
Most of the old crowd is either gone already or post so rarely they might as well be gone anyway. Thanks for pushing me over the edge. There are lots of places closer to home for me.
I sat here and typed a long answer explaining myself to you Major that the way you have read my post is way out of context, but I’m not going to bother with it.
I have never once said your opinion is of little value and nor did I imply it. I have always had a great respect for you but I felt I had to point out that the money you’ve contributed wouldn’t be used as this is what you were objecting to was it not?
To be quite honest with you. the IRC chat room is quiet most of the time anyway.
its eithe rthe holidays or extreemly late at night when people talk.
mainly becuase they all have jobs and RL stuff to be getting on with and thats fine,
I honestly think this is a respectable forums and i can see nothing but trouble comming from the chat.
if this is a ploy to get more members i wish all the luck but most of the people that use chat rooms are kids… and in my experiance smack talking ones at that.(not all)
I agree with the major… altho i have not been here scince the beginning i hear what is said.
If the major really wants to leave i was glad to be in his company and that he is happier in a new home.
but i hope he reconsidders.
everytime someones voice is raised and someone does not like the words that follow an argument starts then more members leave.
and that does not do the forums any good.
it was a vote. simple as…a question was asked… and points were put across.
it is a comunity and a vote was made the highest ammount of votes win…end of…
if you dont like the decision. tough… thats life.
that is why there is a vote… to see if more people are in favour.
or against.
please dont storm off becuase of somthing not going your way.
does anyone else feel de ja vous?
becuase we have been here many many times before.
and many members lost.
Learn from it.
I’ve been hosting this ‘trial / shareware’ jIRC client on my site for what I’m sure is years, I’ve never bothered to register it, I know it’s getting used more and more I thought it was time to register it.
The chartroom it directs you to is one used almost exclusively by TPR members. It has no direct affiliation with TPR.
I went to DT to enquire if there was the possibility of using some of the available funds to purchase this software / licence. The last thing I wanted was a spat, that’s why the poll was posted.
Existing members, new members and old members (wolram) all have used the client in the past for a magnitude of reasons. But usually looking for real time assistance with crunching or PC problems. Waiting for a reply from a post on the boards isn’t always an option.
I really do wish I hadn’t asked.
Either which way, I’ve bought the damn thing, the licensing code should be with me in a few days, if I get the money back it’s a bonus, if not, what the hell… I’ll chalk it up to wanting to make life easier for potential friends and existing friends…
Consider the matter closed - On this occasion I am not going to say
what’s on my mind, equally I will not allow such a mute ickle silly thing
like £26 ($50) drag down TPR.
As this is now causing an upset I would like to chip in with a few points, I must admit to not reading much of the thread until this morning when I ran the Stattomatic and saw Maojc had left the team.
The affiliate fund that was passed onto me after some sterling work from M@tt. As far as I am aware the monies in this fund have only come from the affiliate links, but I would need to verify that with M@tt.
TPR is a democratic forum, this is a vote for usage of funds that have been “contributed” from TPR affiliate links. A poll has been posted with a suggestion for some usage of the money. Each member gets a vote, they are all equal, this has been the way of TPR from the start. Many have voiced opinions with which side they have voted and reasonings, once again the way of TPR. Once the poll closes, the admin team shall take the action requested by the users within the boundaries of the protection of TPR.
As for the implications of such a purchase actually running on the TPR domain, I would take advice on this. My initial view (and opinion) is that if a TPR member is happy to donate the bandwidth on his hosting account, then that is the best way to do so. TPR in effect makes a donation to that user. I would doubt that the “boards” or the “site” would make any links to the utility. Board users may choose to do so, but I cannot see the actual domain linking for legal reasons. As I said I would take advice on this once the poll is closed, and if the poll result was to be for the purchase.
This of course is the route that in my opinion should have been taken. It seems we have hit the self destruct again.
Right — I’ve been a ickle pre-occupied and maybe I should have posted
something up in the temple but busy bee me be and its been a long day today also.
I closed this thread for one reason only… Nobody needs to make a choice
/ vote because I had the intention of taking away any choice anyone had by
paying for the darn thing myself.
Yes the Money M@tt passed accross was affilate money.
Yes Majoc has invested monies in TPR as have many people myself included
in those early day when TPR formed and its a darn site more than £26.
In the matter of this money needed its a closed subject / finished with /
null void… matter to be discussed between byself and Damski at somepoint.
