AV advice

Hi all,

Some of you probably know; i am in france at the moment -and away from a lot of my software CD’s. Been having problems recently with my lappy and the time has come for a full reinstall. I have all the software i need apart from my Norton Internet Security suite CD, which is back in the UK.

Can people recommend a suitable cheap (or preferably free as i only need to use it till i get home next month) alternative that will do a good job at protecting my system? (need firewall too)

TIA

Andy

avast is free and does a mighty fine job, from what I recall, been a while since I bothered with AV, picks up far too much of my work :chuckle:

DT.

I’ve mostly used AVG AV with no problems so far. Picked up some nasties that Norton managed to miss. The free version works fine, but you have to manually update things, not much of a hassle. Zone alarm as a functional free firewall is OK from my limited experience.

Active virus shield is much better than AVG as far as i’m concerned, its actually the kaspersky scanner gut given away free by aol. My daughters machine got a really nasty virus on it with avg installed, installed this and its kicked that out and been faultless since.

I use Avast for anti virus and a old copy of sygate for firewall.

use avg free here (http://free.grisoft.com), auto-updates, does everything well

also heard good things about avast

I used to love Sygate, but after they were taken over by Symantec, I couldn’t get any updates for it, so I was wary of continuing with it. Damn shame, cause it was excellent.

avg users here been using it for ages and not had any trouble with it… top notch bit of kit really…

Same here. Updates at least once a day, but I’ve found if I do an update manually in the eve via right click, it’s actually often twice a day.
