Breaking down the farm

Our offices at work are moving to the corporate location. As part of the move, we were told to remove any and all illegal or non-work related software from our systems. Any system with non-approved software will be refused and not allowed in the building. SETI was specifically mentioned.

Now I have to run around and find each machine I’ve infected and shut down SETI and remove it. I think there are 5 machines here that need to be stopped. It’s going to put a dent in my output, but I have other systems still running at home and at one customer’s site that gave me the go ahead some time back. I’m not quitting, just letting you all know my efforts will be cut down a bit. :frowning:

Some crunching is better than no crunching…

Bummer about the 'puter move, but these things happen. At least you still have resources to draw upon.

Bummer mate.

And just as I was starting to think about lining you up in my sights.

I hate big corps. I work for a huge global one and I can’t even surf unless it’s on company business. They even have Surf Control, which stops me looking after my KOC army.

I have to come home lunchtimes, just to stop me gold going missing and to check on SETI Driver. As for loading SETI, that’s a big no no. :frowning:

Hey Ben, maybe you could draft up some letter/petition or whatever, advocating the benefits of Seti and present it to whoever makes the decisions?

Embelish it a bit first though.

After you move, reload setihide and put it to the TeamTPR account. That way, if anyone digs too deep, you won’t be implicated.

Yes, just as I was seeing you trying to lock on to me! I’ve considered hitting up a few customers for clock time, I just have to find the ones that are connected to the internet. You’ll be catching up with me quick, hopefully I can snag a few systems to keep you from getting too far ahead of me.

The company I work for deals with very sensitive data (if you process a credit card transaction, it most likely comes through us; if you submit insurance to your doctor or pharmacy, it most likely comes through our networks), so they have the network tightly secured and monitor odd traffic. If it becomes apparent to them that something unauthorized is installed, the person who is responsible for the PC takes the fall and could be as serious as termination. I’m just not willing to risk someone’s job (including my own).

My suggestion was half in jest. I understand you would only load a client if there was no impact or risk to the firm’s mission or to its employees.

Well the company has gone and yanked my chain too many times. The whole bl**dy lot are on my last nerve so here is what I’m doing:

If they want SETI off the systems, they can remove it themselves. These lot are going to go over every PC with a fine toothed comb before it is allowed to be set up. They will remove any software or files they feel are not appropriate for the workplace. They have given us a weeks notice on the move date and still hadn’t given us boxes to pack as of today when our department moves TOMORROW. I went and stole boxes from another department to get ready and those folks were none too happy. This company’s organizational skills are nil. The management leaves its employees unsupported and swaying in the wind. I’ve been looking for a new job for well over a year and haven’t had the first interview. I don’t know what it is about my skills or my resume that they find to be lacking (other than I have no certifications or university degrees), but at this point if my second job as a delivery man could pay the bills, I’d swap to it full time and tell these people to s*d off.

Where I work, not only will they fire you for non-authorised use of computer resources they will also send you a bill for all the cpu time that you’ve used. The culture is very much old school IBM mainframe (OS/390, MVS, we still run SAP R/2 for christ’s sake…) where the emphasis is on calculating the cost of every single job running and making sure the appropriate department pays for it. I can just imagine being frog-marched indignantly out the front door with a swift boot up the arse.

Still, the temptation is there and it must be resisted…

They are doing the work for me. From the information I got this morning, if there is any illegal software, such as a pirated copy of MS Office or Photoshop, etc, then they will retain the right to fire you immediately. If there is any unauthorized software that is legally owned or freeware, they will ask you to remove it before they take any action. I’ll take my chances that they’ll tell me to remove the software. My Unix machines will be kept off the network until licenses can be obtained for their OSes so my production will still drop (about 5 of my boxen are Unix), but perhaps not so permanently.
