Check if motorcycle engine is stolen

Does anyone know if there is a website I can plug an engine number in to to check if it’s stolen?

I bought a 2007 KTM 125 SX for my son and would like to be sure it’s not hot.

The frame was re-sprayed from black to orange so the VIN is not visible anymore, I could sand the paint off to check but was hoping there was an easier way.

Hmm, it seems to have got a bit tricky in recent times

When I bought a ropey Porsche with a Rover V8 in the front it was on the V5 as a 2 litre.
I just updated the V5 with new capacity and engine number and that was it

Is it an off road toy that you will trailer everywhere or is it road registered ?

The V5 document from the DVLA should have an engine number on it, if that matches you are good.
When you want to resell it having the VIN visible will make it easier.
Can you mask off the bit of the frame where the VIN is and wire brush it to reveal the number ?

It will fail an MOT if the VIN is not readable

This rates about four on the “Bit Fishy” scale.

You didn’t buy it for cash from a Gumtree seller did you ?
( moves up to a six )

Did the seller meet you half-way from his house and turn up in a white Transit ?
( moves to a NINE! )

Is it in here ?

or here ?

Hahahahahaha, that is funny stuff man.

It’s a 125SX which is off road only, no MOT or anything else required in fact I read that the only reason you would register it is to make finding it in the event of theft easier.

Everything seemed legit and the fella I bought it from has sold a lot of vehicles (bikes, cars, vans etc) on FBM so I am not too concerned.

I think I will give it a bit of sanding this weekend to check the area where the VIN normally is but my concern around that is whether or not the VIN is stamped in to the metal or just the paint in which case I wont find it.

“i had the same when powdercoated, took some coating off down to bare metal thought i had lost numbers then under torchloght at night u can just make out the dots that make my vin up on a 04 bike, might be woth a try then i put clear varnish on the bare metal then made a sticker with vin on and stuck it next to bare metal,no probs at mot when i showed tester sticker and bare metal”

VinStamp

I’m sure it will be fine

If it has never been road registered there will be no DVLA record unless an owner has sent an INF85 form in for the vehicle, this seems to be done if the vehicle is insured.
