Stumbled upon this gem of a linux distribution.

It’s a very commcercialised one but for me it’s ideal.

To setup a file server, FTP server and the associated stuff took me about as long as it took to download the ISO.

Need to have a further play but from a quick google, I can add Upnp with mediatomb (which is what I’m after!) and I can add torrent downloads as well.

And from looks, it’s a simple operation to do so! For a headless server, this is a winner for the sheer speed and ability to sort everything out via a web interface (similiar to webmin but oh so much better!)

I’ve not tried the webmail, mail server and other functionalities but it looks like a very nice option and from reviews I’ve seen others agree.

Worth checking out. Cant see why anyone would use Windows for a home server when this can be setup cheaper and quicker and lot easier to customise online:)

i used ubuntu server the modular design mate it very quick to install and setup

I used to use Ubuntu server. However when trying to install on this specific machine, it would consistently fail at 83% of the install. As did Xbuntu and versions 6.10, 7.04 and 7.10 of each so it was the disk.

On the 83% thats caused by Video typically. Try stuffing in a different card, or if onboard video change the memory size on the shared side. It also can me Internet/NIC related also.

Typically Ubuntu just installs, but some DELL boxes of old have a strange NIC on the board that freaks out even WINDOWS sometimes.
