just a quick question to get peoples P-O-V’s on a task i have been given at work. Its one of those classic Managment ones.
Basicly they want all machines on the network to ‘look’ the same. IE they want the folder tree to be the same on every machine.
How would you lot go about this?
The way i considered was using the ‘diff.exe’ to report a difference from a ‘gold build’ we have, and then have a script reporting the difference back here. From there i dunno where to go for some machine WILL have to have folders which others dont.?
Anyone had a simular task given to them from HIGH above?
because the machines that we use are Business Critical we cannot force anything with out havning it reported back to us first and the reviewed to see if it should be there or not, and becuase some machines need certain thing and others need others then using AD to force it is a no go unfortunatly
map a drive ? you’ve never stop users from creating the way they like to work in my documents, but stores business critical stuff on a mapped drive and it’ll all look the same :sneaky:
well we already control how the dekstop looks, they have very VERY limited access to their machines (mind there are always ways to break through) Map drives would be ok, but these are all remote sites with a lot of tempremental 512k adsl connection <-- tho they will be getting 8meg very soon!
Citrix is a no no, for they dont want to spend that much money, for they are spending laods of money on new systems already (which are a waste of time)
The main issues we are having is their’technical support’ with these monkeys putting random programs on thier machines for temp fixes (cnot considering license laws!
what we want basicly is to have a method to see what differences are at a site, and a toll that we can confirm to remove or to leave if its needed.
oh and the classic management way of DOING IT CHEAP :@
