Do you like cheap (flash-based) sites?

The reason I’m asking is 'cause I’m going to start putting my services about locally for web design etc as an extra income provider… I’ve just been having a quick look at the local “competition” and it’s all total b***ocks :chuckle:

One of the leading local companies produced this site:
http://www.rallycar-rentals.net/

And another one these sites:
http://www.videoproduction4u.tv/one.html
http://www.villageoutlet.co.uk/oakley/shop3/

And this site is a “local portal” that is championed by it’s creators:
http://www.villageoutlet.co.uk/oakley/
… check out those quality graphics

I’m not a fan of Flash stuff myself and don’t really intend to offer it as a service, especially for things like menus etc unless the customer really insists on it and the end product looks really good.

My question is this - if I was to offer the above sites as links from a Portfolio section on my website, would you be impressed or put off? I’m just wondering if I’m being too picky 'cause I think they are a bit pants…?

I would’nt want mine looking as tacky as that carp.

The Flash eye thing in the tekadvantage site is pretty cool, that sort of stuff is acceptable - what I don’t like is poorly constructed, jaggy graphic-ed (word?) Flash menus etc

The tekadvantage site is cool, it gives exactly the right amount of information on the front page and gives clear links to further details  Clarity and useability are key properties of a website, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve left a website within a few seconds of staring at a jumbled mess of information and no clear navigational structure…

/gets off soapbox…

there’d be no way I’d pay anyone with any of those in their folio.

For me flash menus etc. are generally a nono unless the whole site is flash. I hate menus that have been dumped into a site without any thought as to how they fit into the rest of the page.

I like simple, clean and tidy sites. IMO they look much more professional and like they’ve been thought about. That was my goal when putting together EpicDiscs. Some say it’s boring and not very cool compared to the likes of 2advanced etc. but there are many more who’ve said it’s easy to use and to get at information. Surely this is the purpose of a website? the trick then is to keep to this but still make the site visually interesting.

I’ve thought about doing what you’re planning a few times and have done a bit of freelance stuff but considering the amount of people doing it I never really gave it a go. I was planning to put together a few site templates (actually just reuse ones I’d made already  ) so that I could offer a set fee and minimise development time. Plus that way the client knows pretty much what to expect.

You might be onto a winner though mate if the best of the local firms are doing sites like those

The 2advanced site is a fantastic site, whoever wrote it is obv at the top of his/her field… but it’s not really all that practical for everyday use is it - have you tried viewing it on a dial-up connection

Your EpicDiscs site is cool, it definitely shows people what they are looking for and doesn’t blind them with pointless animations or pseudo-nu-age-retro colour scheme carp.

I’m just going to do it in addition to my 9-5 job, it’d be easy enough to bash out a few sites per month for a few extra quid

Yeah that was my plan to, just never got round to it and was put off by the amount of crap out there. Might give it a go some time.

Even if it doesn’t work out and you only do a site every now and again, it’s not like it costs you any money so there’s nothing to lose in having a crack

ive seen some sites which are basically a portfolio of junk and they want clients i mean omg, dont they use the net much???

Nope  I would be embarassed to even admit to creating that monstrosity, let alone have it as my flagship site!

OK, it’s agreed the site sucks big time.

Judging by the standard of those fine example’s, I may start doing some myself. Obviously all buttons would be in the form of custard splats and most theme’s would include lots of rubberesque (new word) styling:D

hmm… some class work there
