That would be very fast CPU speed, But with only 1 Pci-e its not that great GPU speed. Not too sure if it’d all go together but ive tryed. Why 12gb ram? Because I can dream! If I wanted a easy build, i’d just for a i7 965…
there’s a new range of Dell servers, the r900 that has 4 cpu socket, each one 6core Xeon and 256Gb of ram. A mere 5 400Gb raid5 15K rpm drives will do. A snip at just under £40k.
That’ll ensure me top host in Boinc projects
Sun X4540 would be a good place to start for me I think…
* Dual Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors
* 48 integrated SATA disk drives onboard
* Scales from 12TB to 48TB in a 4U rack space
* Highest throughout rates (1.5GB/s from disks to network, 2.5GB/s to memory)
* Twice as compact and half the cost of competing systems
* Runs Solaris OS, Linux, and Windows operating systems
Or there’s the rather tasty PRIMEPOWER 2500
* Up to 128 CPUs at 2.08 GHz
* Supports up to 512 GB of memory
* Supports up to 32x 4.0 TB UltraSCSI drives
* Includes 320 PCI slots
only downside apart from the cost… is fully populated it weighs in at a slightly unwieldy 1,550kg :scared:
I was also thinking of the top500 list when I saw this thread, but I wouldn’t pick the #1 as that uses a Cell-Opteron mix. I want one that’ll run common stuff, so AMD fans might pick the #2 running Opterons. But I have to wonder if the #3 using Xeons is better value overall as it is only half as fast as #2 yet using 1/3 the number of processors.
From a typical crunching perspective, Opteron’s advantage with interconnect bandwidth isn’t important so I’d expect the Xeons to do even better relatively.
stuff you could actually buy, that will all work together and fit in the case
and not need a small nuclear plant to power
supermicro x8dai
2 x w5580
4 x 6(3x2)gb crucial ddr3 ecc ram
2 x intel x-25m (in raid 0 boot)
10 x wd 2tb (in raid 5 storage)
areca 1280ml raid controller
2 x gtx295
2 x lg bluray 8x burner
sound blaster x-fi elite pro
logitech z-5500 5.1 speakers
pc power & cooling 1200w psu
lian-li pc-a70b case
2 x planar px2611w monitors
Roadrunner Cost, around $133 million which is just out of my price range due to the credit crunch.
SOOOOOOOOOO, with reality hitting home, I’ve decided on this
BlueGeneL To quote IBM: ‘With a sustained world-record speed of 478.2 teraFLOPS — is a revolutionary, low-cost machine delivering extraordinary computing power’ - seems like a real bargain. Saving hard and with some luck in the stock market ‘cough, cough’ TPR should have this crunching in a little over 500 years.
Like drezha , sort of been playing with the idea of putting a couple of these in a fairly simple i7 rig yet to be specced . Ah the stuff dreams are made of .:Plot:
all I need is a big win on my Premium Bonds - 20k minimum - 5k for the machine and 15k to buy my wife’s permission to build it.
TBH I wouldnt mind say £10k to just source and buy parts to build a nice rig…
Obviously if I got a lottery win id setup a garage or something with some air con and spend a large amount and run them flat out for a whole year… just to see the results…
I was really bored today so i made a dream computer from OCUK

Why so skint on the RAM bud.
Should be using Dominator GT’s at around 1000 pounds for 3x2GB.
