Dumb question

We are about to go over to broadband after a long wait for our exchange to hit it’s trigger level.

I use virgin.net for email and web space now as we are about to ditch aol, with things like email and web space we have to dial in to our free virgin account. Will this be possible when we have signed up to bt broadband ? I just can’t think how to do it without dialing in to there server.

this may seem like a dumb question but as i know nothing about broadband !! This could affect our choice to go with bt for our broadband. We decided to go with bt as they have to remove the isdn and enable us at the same time and thought this would be easyer if we just went with bt for the first year.

I find that the policy of access varies with ISPs. As an observation, I find that monthly subscription ones are more flexible on how you can access the services, whereas payg ones are more restrictive since they make money when you call so they need to you do it as much as possible.

To keep things flexible, use a redirection service so that you can move ISPs in the future without changing web site name or e-mail address.

So basicaly your saying that it may not be possible without dialing in ?

I take it your staying with Virgin when you move to Broadband?
If it should be just a matter of upgrading your account to a
Virgin broadband option.

You emailmails are set to retrieve in a web like system
so as such your accessing a server on-line in reality you
can have your outlook express or other email account
looking at different email servers for different accounts.

So as long as the email for broadband are on the same server
you don’t need to change your email settings.

** all on the presumption your staying with virgin.

No thats the trouble I am going with BT but was hopeing to still use my virgin email. hope that makes sence ?

Like you, I started with a new ISP for ASDL. I have kept the old one for now for my home pages, updating using ftp as before, and still receive most of my email through them - the name of the server is resolved like any other domain name. Most ISPs only allow you to send mail from their own server though.

Sounds like a similar setup to what I have. I used Demon for years before I got ntl BB. Keeping the mail retreival settings, I can pick it off the Demon servers wherever I am. But as a spam prevention matter, ISPs only let you send outgoing mail when you’re connected directly to them. So I can still send outgoing mail, via ntl’s server.

Note not all ISPs may allow you to get mail from elsewhere, my freenetname account before it expired didn’t let me get mail unless I was connected by them. So this policy can and will vary between ISPs. Can only suggest you try it to find out.

Ahhh right thanks for your patience peeps, sorry but I did say I didn’t have a clue how Broadband works !

I think It will probebly just be easyier for me to just join up with Virgin.net as with BT you get no Email or web space, and to be hounest i wouldn’t like to rely on them anyway !

Thanks for helping the dumb bloke
