DVD playing and Vista

This is on behalf of somebody at work who has recently had a machine with Vista Pre-installed.

I think going by what he said he had cyberlink dvd software version 5 or 6 ?

Anyway he said everything worked fine for a few weeks but now when trying to play a DVD he gets the sound but no picture.

I do not know the ins & outs but he was talking about having to upgrade to the next version up but did not want to as that would cost money to purchase.

Question being… What good for playing DVD’s in Vista & is Free

Hopefully those with it or who have been growing with it through beta stages will have an answer.

Ta muchly in advance.

Does not VLC player work in Vista? IIRC when I tried Vista, I believe VLC worked.

That plays DVD’s fine. in XP and linux so maybe you should give that a go?

Maybe he installed a codec that buggered it up ?

Doesn’t media player do the job anyway ?

Sorry, more questions to your question… I can’t think of a properly free piece of software that will do the job other than wmp, I have tried vlc but i get a red screen when i use it under vista

New pc not messed with unless windows updates itelf has done something.

Only other thing I can think of is that its trial software or something like that and has passed its trial period.

Don’t think they would know how to anyway.

Works every time!

if you get home basic or peimium, you DON’T get the mpeg 2 decoder included, which is why you need to install some form of dvd playback software, this then enables you to view dvd’s from both media player and media centre. If a trial verson was installed & has expired then that would account for it stopping. If installing Vusta Ultimate I beleive that an mpeg2 decoder is included.

Hope this helps.
