There’s a guy here at work who wants to do an IT course, he’s just moved in to doing the same job as me and wants to know what’s the best qualification to get to almost guarantee a job in civvy street? Now I’m a windows baby so said MCSE, but what’s your opinions?

I would say there are no guarantees with qualifications. I interviewed someone recently who looked like the bees knees on paper, MCSE, MCT, MCSA, MCDBA, CCNA, CCNP but when we got down to the tech questions at interview, all he could answer was’ Well, with the labs on the cisco courses, i would do this’ or ‘MS say to do it this way in their coursework’. Needless to say, he didn’t get the job.

Of them all, the MCSE would be a starting point IF he will actually be getting to use what it teaches, and can then show this when getting interviewed in civvy street. The best thing, would be to work hard and get a damn good reference from his boss when he moves on.

Just my 2p’s worth
