Fedora 2 and VNC

60% of my crunchers are in my garage roof so it is important that I can use VNC .
I have installed Fedora 2 on one of my machines using a spare drive , I have configured Samba so that I am in the same domain/workgroup and I can see all of the other boxes from linux and vice versa , But I cannot control any of the windows boxes when I use VNC on linux , I get the viewer box pop up , fill in the system name as I do normally , enter , the box dissapears then - nada - nothing happens not even an error message . google reveals that linux uses tight VNC and my windows boxes use real VNC . are they compatible ??? or am I missing something simple . I will worry about getting VNC server to run at another time, looks a bit of a nightmare for a *nix novice like me .
