Fold FASTER Dag Nabbit!

can I install folding and take it to a different pc ?

I should be able to double my output to about 3000 credits a day again, at least that is my target

DT.

Nope, no need to install.
Download the text only client, put in a folder, run and off you go.

Ctrl + C to close then move folder.

As long as the target computer can access the internet briefly to create a registry entry with the user key (by downloading from web) your sorted:)

As long as the target computer can access the internet briefly

it cant :frowning:

Easy fix…

  1. Download the client on a pc that can access the internet. Put the fah504-console.exe in its own directory.
  2. Setup the client by typing fah504-console.exe -configonly enter your username and team (TPR=315)
  3. When asked “Ask before fetching/sending work” choose yes.
  4. Finish the config using your desired settings.
  5. Start the client by typing fah504-console.exe -local
  6. When asked, download work, do so. Once downloaded and you see Completed 0 out of xxxxxxx steps (0) press ctrl-c
  7. Package the whole directory (including the /work directory) and move it to the PC that cannot access the internet.
  8. Once the work is complete, it will ask to send results, choose no and ctrl-c to close the client.
  9. Package the /work directory and the queue.dat file located in the root folding directory
  10. Transfer that lot to the PC that can access the net. Overwrite everything
  11. Type fah504-console.exe -send all
  12. repeat steps 5-11!

ok… not that easy

That should sure help!

But still worth the effort Bin, go on you know you want to

I should also add. If you are going to transfer via disk, use a program like winRAR. In the archive program there is usually an option to “Split into volumes”. Thats what I use. Also use some sort of verification so you don’t corrupt the WU. Some WU’s are small >1mb others 5+mb

Good luck, let me know if you have any issues.

fenix, cheers for that. Now means I can run WU’s while in uni PC labs as I couldn’t do it before, it always tried to access web to grab a registry key.:frowning:

Now with the local switch, I can download at residences and then move over to the labs and work no probs:D

I was gona  I dot it for boinc and ill do it for folding

Here is some more information on “Sneakernetting”. The process I described above. It contains a lot more information about how to do this including some registry keys information. I dont know if its needed for the console version however. Let me know how it works.

You just need the one machine that can access the net to have folders for every instance of fah that you run. Never run these instances on the machine with the network connection except to download. And never forget the -local flag. You will have to keep track of which folder is for which computer.

You can run a copy of the client on the machine with all the Sneakernetting machines on it, but make sure that its also running with the -local flag. You can’t run 2 instances in this case however. (ie, 1 on the networked machine + 1 sneakernet machine downloading a wu on the networked machine, (or uploading a wu) at the same time. All the folding clients must be set to Machine ID 1 to match their un-networked counterparts… pwhew!

So from reading that you still need the registry keys.

Only if you use the graphical version. 5.03 for the userid, the console version the userid is stored in the client.cfg, but will be created when you run the client config on the non-net system

I did make a mistake when I posted this. You must export:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PandeGroup\Folding@Home

to the machine you are sneakernetting work units to. Just export the key and import on the new machine.

Yeah thought you might have to :frowning:

I’m in the uni labs now and just tried running this…

m:\Folding\FAH504-Console.exe -local -advmethods -oneunit
and it tried to access the unit.

Will try and do that registry when I get home

That all works now Fenix Cheers

glad to help. sorry I missed it the first time.

When I said it all works…I mean it worked on my laptop at home…

but at Uni it wont because the admins have disabled registry merging  Therefore unless anyone can help with beating the firewall or whatever they use, Folding is a no no on Uni machines…
