I’ve got an external 320GB caddy which I want to use to extend the storage on my PVR (Freesat) and need to format it ext3. Don’t need to access it or do anything else with it once formatted - just plug it into the PVR (and hope) 
Are there any free utilities suitable for a muppet that I can use to do this from a windows machine.

GPARTED or one of it’s offshoots might do the trick - never used it myself.

If that wont work you could always boot the PC from one of the live distributions on CD/USB and use its tools to do the job.
