This is a photograph of real a real nanomachine. The photograph was made with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). An SEM is a powerful tool used by scientists to image the smallest of devices.
The machine is a ratchet actuator. The device pictured is about 50 microns across. For comparison, a human hair is about 100 microns across. The device operates by a series of very small motors driving the long thin, clips forward and backwards. As they move, the small hooks on the ends grab a gear tooth, and then pull. This continuous grabbing and pulling causes the gear to spin.
