how to?

hiya folks,

i am looking for an easy way to change the default sound device within windows from one to another.

i have 2 sound devices listed

speakers/headphones (normal everyday laptop speakers)

and

hdmi

windows apps will run through whatever the default is set to but it doesnt automaticly change when i plug the hdmi lead in. so i need a way to swap it that doesnt involve opening the control panel every time.

any suggestions?

Don’t know if this will do the trick but worth a shot…

create a desktop shortcut

add to it… sndvol32.exe -D n -tray

You will need to change n for a number 0 1 2 3 4 5 etc to get the right device

On doing that when you click the shortcut you will get a small volume control popup that will simply go away if you click else where.

hmm that just brings up the mixer and while i can then use that open the sound control panel thats not quite what im looking for…

thanks for the idea

a little util that runs in your system tray, requires no installation and allows me to do exactly what you want to. I’ve the default set to the machine sound card, and Skype set to my USB headset, which in itself is a sound card. Late at night I get told off  for having the speakers on so looked this up to change my output device to the USB one quickly. It even has shortcuts

Some programs are annoying in that they require a restart though before picking up that the default device has changed.

DT.

cheers DT that will do perfectly
