IE Update problems

Microsoft has announced a ‘Critical’ emergency update to Internet Explorer which fixes an error introduced by an earlier patch; the effect will be that your PC should offer you an automatic update from Microsoft in the next day or so - and you should accept the offer and install it. The machine will require a restart after the patch has been installed.

The bulletin addresses three flaws in all versions of Internet Explorer, and also an attack vector in the Firefox web browser for users with the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) plugin enabled.

There is a cautionary warning about the sequence in which updates should be applied - provided that your machine has already received the earlier cumulative updates, this patch will be fine - but it won’t work the other way round - putting the new patch on if the older one hasn’t been applied.

Using the MS Update site (linked below) ought to work it out properly for you if the update has not already arrived automatically. The articles below give further detailed information.

ooh lovely, another critical fix to fix the fix that broke the system that was working OK before the automatic download that broke the fix in the first place … again

question: If you took your car to a garage every month for a service, yet every time you had to return it 2 days later because the service had caused a fault to the steering, would you continue to take it every month for the service or simply keep driving it without all the hassle ?

… and what would you then think if every time you opened the bonnet to check your oil/water a sign popped onto the windscreen saying that you hadn’t taken the car for its monthly service and you really really REALLY needed to because if you didn’t, and it rained, you might leave a window open and rain would get in ?

IMO Windows Automatic Update is in the same league as the ‘extended warranty’ that salesmen try to get you to buy when you purchase an electrical item … you know, the one that costs you 4 times as much as the original purchase price

Yes, I have my Victor Meldrew* head on today

^ Me too. But when you have the world tightly gripped by the short & curlies… do you really give a damn?

for MS to do an “out of band” update, yes they do care - rather a lot it would seem. There are many vunerabilities that are not published and not considered important enough to do a critical emergency update. This one must be quite important.

DT.

DT has it nailed. Question is, would you like it not to have been sent? As developers large or small we don’t send out patches critical or otherwise unless required. I’m sure bashing MS is easy, and yes sometimes they need a kick in the ass, but the fact remain and will remain they have 90+ % of the world computers using some form of WINDOWS.

I have a MAC love it, have two systems with LINUX love those also but I make my living from WINDOWS based apps, as again 90% of the population does, so that said patch away, keep us safe and if it’s a redo oops…even I oops all to often!

2 cents from someone with only 2 cents…
