I sent this note off to the Vice Provost for Research at the University of Kansas:

To: James Roberts, RE: Lifemapper

I contribute to a distributed computing project run by your University called Lifemapper. I have nine computers running 24/7 at my own expense on the project and am currently your 45th biggest contributor to date. I belong to a team called Team Phoenix Rising whose members contribute to various DC projects and compete with each other and other teams for the top rankings within each project. We are number one in Lifemapper.

Since your DBA left there has been zero communication about the project from KU. Months go by without a single posting to the message board from Lifemapper. I understand there are staffing problems at the project and you are seeking a new DBA. Unfortunately, no one at KU has taken on the burden of communicating with those who give their time and resources to your research.

There is considerable unease within the DC community about Lifemapper. Emails from users, which used to be answered promptly, are never responded to. A database outage began two days ago that has not been repaired. We all understand these things happen. A posting to the message board listed below just to say what is wrong and when it might be fixed will go a long way to soothing the current unease. A number of long time contributors have left Lifemapper to join other projects due to a perceived lack of commitment by KU. In the current climate, it has also become difficult to recruit new contributors. Thank you.
