Have any of you noticed a problem with your machine slowing down to a snails pace, especialy in explorer ?
This has only been like it since I installed lifemapper as a service, it could be coinsidence but thats 2 machines now.
I have set the priority to 32 and this has not improved, the only way i can browse with explorer and not die of old age is to stop the service, also tryed wiping the lot and starting again.
Erm… priority 32 is “normal” so it competes with everything else equally. Try setting it to 64 which is “Low (idle) priority”. I’m using 64 and don’t notice any adverse speed effects on my normal usage.
this was on 64 with the problem, i just wrongly assumed the lower the number the lower the priority, but just changed it back to 64 (by taking out the -p command). Still not good, every link is taking about 3 seconds to load while using windows explorer.
this is starting to bug me, anyone else got this problem or is it just me ?
Might be worth double-checking it is actually running at lower priority. Assuming you’re running XP or 2k, find it in task manager and right click to get to the priority settings.

Ahhh you helped me find the problem , because I was lazy and used fire daemon to set lifemapper as a service it seems to by passing my settings and running it at normal priority not low. It wont let me change this in task manager so I will have to look for an option in fire daemon, or find out how to manualy install it as a service.
Found the option to lower it with firedaemon, all o.k now.
Denzyboy - I have trouble with my machine at work with Lifemapper on it. My machine is not very powerful and if I try and work with it running it slows right down that it struggles even to open Word or Excel:(
I turn it on when I go home and switch the screen off, hoping no one will notice the machine is not switched off:D

It should not matter if your machine is a power beast or a mear p75, if it is set up right it should only use spare cycles so that when your using the pc it should feel as it normaly does. It maybe you have the same problem I did, the piority is set to high so that when you use the machine it has to fight for the cycles with lifemapper.
How do you run lifemapper ? as a service or do you just double click on it ?
Have you downloaded the latest client ? I belive this should be set to low priority as default (so you don’t have to do anything)
Dezyboy - Many thanks for the advice. I am not very technically minded and have to wait for Mr Balrog to get round to helping me. He is always to busy on the forums:(
I am currently running the GUI. But Mr Balrog has promised to show me how to install the CLI soon. Then hopefully I can sort out my work machine. If he does not do it soon, I will turn off his machine while he is at work so he will not be crunching Seti.

If it gets out he has you using the gui, he will find the time to show you, or be ridiculed !
I’m sure after him reading your last sentence he will do it a.s.a.p !

128: High priority
256: Real time priority (not recommended) [/B]
That’s correct for Win up to WinNT.
Newer versions of Win are using a bit mask with 2 more options.
Ok, it’s a bit more complicated (threading etc.) but for a basic understanding the following simple list should do.
Valid priorities under Windows systems:
32: Normal priority
64: Low (idle) priority
128: High priority
256: Real time priority (not recommended)
16384: below normal (Win 2k/XP and newer)
32768: above normal (Win 2k/XP and newer)
