Lunar Eclipse tonight (in uk)

from the register

By the time the sun sets in the UK, the partial phase of the eclipse will be well under way: it begins at 19:48 BST, with totality occuring at 20:52 and lasting until 22:08, BST. The eclipse will be visible from Europe, Africa, South America, Australsia and much of Asia.

A lunar eclipse only happens when the Sun, Earth and Moon are in alignment, with the Earth casting a shadow onto the moon. Fortunately, this doesn’t totally black the moon out. Instead, the Moon looks reddish, reflecting the light refracted by Earth’s atmosphere back down to us. The colour of each eclipse varies slightly, depending on the amount of dust in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Dr Jacqueline Mitton of RAS said: “If the weather is kind to us, this could be a very interesting sight, with the eclipsed Moon becoming more and more obvious as the sky gradually darkens after sunset and the Moon gets higher in the sky.”

/looks out at pouring rain and thunder clouds, and the forecast from BBC Weather site is

Ditto. I think we’ve had all four seasons in one day today.

Cleared up just enough to see it , just starting to get brighter now …

Still overcast here unfortunately. Will keep an eye for a break in the cloud.

just seen it ending here. Fantastic

full on moonage

:moon:

btw, there’s a planet type thing (cresent) West by NW… really bright to the eye, crescent shaped with a 'scope…

anyone know what it is ?

it’s not mars cos it’s white… venus doesn’t have a moon (does it?) so I dunno… it can’t be the earth casting a shadow on it so it must be it’s own moon making it crescent shaped?

still muchos  though

Saw it last night in Cape Town as well. Started around 20:00 and was fully eclipsed around 10:15. Awesome to watch. We have a large window type skylight in our lounge, I could watch the entire thing from my couch while watching the Survivor VII final.

It was just great down here (Oz east coast and had to get up at 04:30!).

There was also a meteor shower half way thru it (just before the full eclipse started) which, apparently, is an annual event for us down under.

Also, we passed thru a bit of the tail of bits of Halleys Comet (1986) at the same time.

Wonderful light show all round.

We were clouded out here in Tassie.

Also missed seeing comet Bradfield.:frowning:
