Defective McAfee update causes worldwide meltdown of XP PCs

At 6AM today, McAfee released an update to its antivirus definitions for corporate customers that had a slight problem. And by “slight problem,” I mean the kind that renders a PC useless until tech support shows up to repair the damage manually. As I commented on Twitter earlier today, I’m not sure any virus writer has ever developed a piece of malware that shut down as many machines as quickly as McAfee did today.

Yeah, hit us in Uni here yesterday about 1600GMT. Thankfully mines wasn’t killed but they now have an automatic fix in place.

That’s worrying as I’m monitoring McAfee AV upgrades for a client, on Win2K machines though. Any idea what version this is?

Corporate only from what I heard.

There where sketchy reports that home users had been hit… but that all died down pretty quick… it is still hell of a balls up :confused:

M$ must be laughing their socks off. If it happens to them with their AV at least they can argue you get what you pay for?

Obviously lucky at work - had no effect for us and we have the Corp version.
