Microsoft: Windows 7 RC free for everyone

Confidence in OS brings a year to try before you buy… Free for a year

review from the reg :

is anyone using this ?at the mo what sort of spec does it need to run as vista don’t like running on my lappy i only got 1gig of ram

I’ve had the beta running for a while, but with 4Gb ram and 4x2.4Ghz cpus.

Burnt the DVD’s this morning, only to leave them at home   I’ll just have to try them on my home machine.

DT.

I tried a very very early release… and from the outset it was really stable… and worked better on the machine than vista had…

It seems that everything they wanted in Vista in the first place is now in Win7

Cant wait to try RC1

I’ve been crunching with the most recent beta for months, including CUDA. Very stable. I wouldn’t try it with one gig of RAM though.

Bugger all that giberish, wot about ma games, will they still work?,

Think about C&C, Doom, GTA, you know the old favs, the games you go back to, coz you can…

Can you upgrade it? Because i dont wan to start again…

Microsoft has never supported upgrades of betas or RCs. So no.

Win7 will ship with an XP compatability mode that appears to run via virtualPC virtual-machine software but without a VM actually running… bit confusing but the short of it is Win7 should be able to run anything XP can.

Slight caveat is I’m not sure the XP-mode will support hardware accelerated gfx :sigh:

windows 7’s xp support will not support anything that requires direct access to the hardware as its virtulised. personaly i think win 7 is fab and will be upgrading the 3 vista machines i have to win 7

All my machines are running 7, one dualo boots to XP. Been running Beta1 just reinstalled to RC, all smiles. Runs better on my 800Mhz 1gb RAM UMPC than Vista, which is cool, best bit though is the extra battery life.

Got the RC last night. Just installed it on a spare HD thrown in my lappy. Took a windows update to get all the right drivers for wireless, sound, gfx but now working nice and definitely feeling more responsive than Vista, maybe even on a par with XP. Still lots of software to throw on yet and see if it breaks or slows down, but looking promising so far. This is what Vista should have been.

I’m running a x32 version as a Virtual Hdd, and I’m going to be setting up a x64version on my main machine (got boot drives in caddies so I can swap out between x64pro and doze 7)
