New Rodent

I’ve been using the MS Intellipoint Optical mouse since forever, and own 3 at home plus one at work. The age is starting to show as one had a switch which didn’t bounce any more, and another lost feeling in its tail. Time for an update…

Now here’s where I need advice. Before that, I have an odd requirement… in the main game I play, there are no mouse settings. The mouse performance is as passed on to it by the OS. Win2k works great. Unfortunately, WinXP doesn’t seem to pass on its settings and the mouse is far too slow. The MS drivers are no help. Why not stick to Win2k? It is getting seriously old as an OS, and my laptop has XP pre-installed which I’d rather use than retro-fitting it with 2k as I have been (2k doesn’t support all the power saving features). This problem isn’t going to get better in the future.

After a google, it looks like Logitech mice drivers have an option to have different speed settings for desktop and in game(s). Can anyone here confirm that? If that is the case, that would seem ideal. If any other mice makers do that, it would be ok too.

So I need recommendations for mice. I like the feel of the Intellimouse optical and its button arrangement, so something similar would be nice. I really dislike “big” mice like the intellimouse explorer and similar “ergonomic” ones. Around 5 buttons (one of which is the wheel) are required. I prefer wired mice.

Razer Copperhead
Logitech G5 Gaming Mouse

Adjustable polling rates.

Argh… decisions decisions… the Logitech seems better in functional spec, but from the looks the shape of the copperhead looks more like what I’m used to. Which do I get?.. both  With a bit of luck they’ll arrive before the weekend. Then was the other big decision… do I get the razor in red, green or blue? Bl… Red. I think I reached blue LED saturation point, and green reminds me too much of Xbox.

if the razor ur Talking about is the mobile phone and you have a choice…imo that phone is really really crap…not worth anything… I sold mine and bought a sony ericcson…

The razor doesnt hold much video…pictures or sounds… and doesnt record video!!

OH and btw Logitech kit through and through here

/me wonders if Binlala read the thread title, the 1st post or any of the replies before replying

Curly

sorry Bin, your reply was so far off topic it reminded me of a conversation with my deaf uncle! did you read the title or the content?

I too have recently changed from my much loved Win 2K Pro to XP :sigh:

oh come on Curly … surely you’ve heard of the latest MS Intellipoint Optical video conference phone with inbuilt sat nav, blood pressure monitor, full duplex printing capability, and reverse parking sensors (the “deluxe” version even has a radiator bleed key)

well I read the first post and bits of the others…bit crap aint I…it was 8:39AM !!

ah!! the all singing all dancing v2 model, he must have been on about the v3

Curly

herd the model thats comming out next year has a 19" lcd display on it

Back to the original topic  the mice arrived today. Just plugged them in at work and had a quick feel. So no software options to look at yet.

First impressions are the Logitech will take some getting used to from me. It is bigger than the intellimouse so I have to in effect re-learn how to hold it comfortably for long periods.

The Razer is more of an odd shape than I thought as it sticks out at the sides, which isn’t too bad as it is a somewhat narrow shape.

Both mice have the adjustable sensitivity. The logitech is ahead as there are two buttons on the top and a LED indicator to show which setting it is in. The razer has one botton on the base, and no visual indication.

I wanted a “5 button” mouse, the logitech only have 4! I didn’t check earlier… arguably there are two extra ones as the wheel goes sideways too, but again that would take some getting used to.

After using each for about 10 minutes I found my hand aching. I guess I’m not used to the shape yet so it is causing more stress while I adapt. Will have to see how the software features work when I get home.

I wonder how the MS laser mouse compares to these?..

More mice! Pic shows 5 mice. Left to right, they are the Logitech G5, MS laser 6000, MS Intellimouse Optical, Razer Copperhead, and one that came with the PS2 linux kit I was using on a secondary box.

Having used them for some time, follwing are my comments.

The MS intellimouse optical has been my standard mouse for countless years. However it is showing its age, and better pointer movement would help. This does serve as a reference for my ideal mouse shape.

The Logitech shape did take some getting used to, but it is ok now. I’d still prefer a smaller, sleeker design but it is my fave of the newer mice on my desktop. The mouse software sucks, even after checking I had the latest version, the accelleration settings simply didn’t work correctly (as in, off!). Even with it off in both windows and the driver, the mouse pointer was moving with it on. I found the mouse worked best with no software loaded, just using the windows built in driver.

The Razer Copperhead is my fave for the laptop, as the shape is more usable in less stable places. The software doesn’t fight back, and allows the right side two buttons to adjust sensitivity, keeping the left side buttons for navigation. The positions are not idea, and I do have to feel for them now and then. But since they are used outside of gaming this is not a big deal.

The MS laser mouse 6000 shape is much more like the Intellimouse optical I’m used to. But it isn’t close enough… the front of the mouse is more square which I don’t like, and the side buttons are tiny and very far forward so hard to reach. Software is unremarkable. No gaming settings or adjustments.

Overall, I think I’m going to use the Logitech on my main box, the copperhead on my laptop, and the MS laser on my secondary box. Now please tell me I’m not crazy for going through all this to find “the right mouse”.

I don’t think you’re crazy at all, in fact you’ve probably helped me on a future mouse choice

… anyway, there’s only 5 … Neil had a housefull

I’m going to be purchasing a new mouse soon. The little rubber feet under my MS intellimouse have worn away I’ve used it for so long. It doesn’t slide on the mousepad nicely anymore and makes using it feel like a workout.

G5 it is I think:nod:

I’ve been using the MS Intellimouse and the standard MS optical of a similiar shape for ages now, probably about 6years on the same mice. I do honestly dread the day they break and I have to open the spare one I have in the cupboard

DT.

I’m using the MS wireless Optical 2 that came with the Multimedia keyboard.

Took some getting used to after using the MS Intellimouse Explorer for bluetooth…

@DT that’s the intellimouse, and intellimouse optical. My Intellimouse optical I’ve had for many years. I had to swap it for a spare when the left mouse button went funny, single clicks started to get detected as doubles. How old? I dunno, but in the gaps an ecosystem was building up, and the case was more yellow than beige. The replacement didn’t last anywhere near as long, with what appears to be an open circuit in the cable as it will stop working at times and a jiggle of the cable sorts it. The third one I got worked ok, but occasionally it mis-tracks where the earlier ones didn’t. At first I thought it was dust on the sensor, but it’s clean. That was the point where I started to look at the other models…

I dunno if the intellimouse explorer has changed much over the years, but I remember hating the early ones. I never liked the big shape forcing you to hold the whole thing in the hand, where I prefer a light grip on the sides to move the mouse. The G5 is kinda explorer-ish in that respect hence it took some getting used to.

I am wondering if I am insane enough to try and move the innards of the G5 into the intellimouse housing. That would be perfect but I fear my mechanical abilities may be exceeded by such a mod. Hmm… maybe it would be easier to move the laser 6000 innards into the intellimouse body.

Might need some suggestion on mouse surfaces later too. Remember some at last mojos swearing by high end mouse pads.

nowt wrong with the patented VTD corner mouse mats for Mojos.

One A4 piece of paper and some parcel tape does the trick nicely  Doubles up as a notepad as well when you purchase the “pen” addin :chuckle:

DT.

/me consults his patent lawyer…

have used a ms intellimouse for many a long day…till I swapped to a logitech a couple of years ago, currently using an mx 1000, seemed big and bulky at first… but once I got used to it the weight and size is ideal for me.

Curly

I gave up on the piece of A4 when I stopped using ball mice. The optical ones are much less fussy, except that time I messed around with a glass top table…
