Noobs guide to folding

Here I am, new to this folding lark.

All the gear and no idea. Looked at the sticky and thought, there must be an easier way.

Somebody draw up a stepwise guide I can follow and I’m in as long as its 10 steps or less.
Dont mind if its a service or just a thing I click on to make it run.

If I get one running, there will be others . . . . . .

Simple really.

Download the exe. Create shortcut and add the following switches at the end of the exe path.

-forceasm -verbosity 4 (this outputs the wu process so you can see that it’s working)

Run the shortcut and enter your details and app parameters. It’s as simple as that.

So no need to sign up or join a team or anything then

</pedantic>

No need to sign up - just check the username you want to use is free Here

Download the Windows NT/2000/XP “No-nonsense” text-only console (with built-in Windows-service-install option) client software from that page and save on your HDD (I usually stick it on a data drive in a directory called Folding@Home)

Run the FAH504-Console.exe

The first prompt will be username - type in whatever name you decided
The next prompt will be team number - enter 315
The next prompt will be to run as a service - yes or no depending on your choice. If you do not run as a service you will have to start manually.
The next prompt is ask before fetching/sending work - no
Use Internet Explorer settings - yes or no
Use proxy - yes or no
Allow work units > 5Mb - yes if you are on broadband
Change advanced options - I usually opt for No

And away you go. If you have said ‘yes’ to service it can only start after the next reboot.

Note: if you simply run the executable instead as part of the download all the work files etc will be saved to your desktop.

Just to add to Alta’s list, if you are running more than 1 instance of the client on a machine (SMP or HT enabled perhaps ;)), then you’ll need to say yes to the advanced options and give each instance a Machine ID (1 to 8) so the servers understand your requirements.

This is needed as by design, the servers will attempt to send the same WU to a single Machine ID if it hasn’t been returned yet, so you could (in an extreme case) end up with up to 8 instances of the same WU running…

If you like to see what is going on , you can use Electron Microscope to monitor all your rigs HERE or DC monitor HERE
Using Linux DC monitor works fine under wine or the Gkellfah plugin for Gkrellm gives a lot of stats

Welllllll

I think its running, guess its going to be 20hours for the first unit

It even claims to have sent something to somewhere.

But Where ?

Back to the server it came from

Folding stats aren’t live. Not sure if they’ve changed the update frequency, but they used to be every 3 hours, so you should show on the 9pm run in that case…

Would this be you perchance?

Ahhh, my first result.

Wonder if I can find any more hardware to keep that lonely single CPU company ?

help … silly messages …

me stares out of the window, thinks of trimming the conifers

I’m getting core download error while installing it

Your allocated server seems to be OK ( see http://fah-web.stanford.edu/serverstat.html, ) you normally get this if a server goes down ,I think it ‘should’ reallocate after a few retries ,

ahha … success

the proggy downloaded a new core version (mine was also corrupt Hids) and now I have a job to do :wiggle:

Completed 0 out of 20000000 steps (0) - crikey  … and it’s started to rain, so trimming the conifers is out

Err how do i minimise the screen??

Edit/ im guessing that TPR is team 315 then :stuck_out_tongue:

You uninstall it and run the service install! :stuck_out_tongue:

I would download electron microscope 3 and use the options to start the client and hide the window also it’s a nice way to monitor the client.

If my fan on lappy going full throttle is anything to go by, I’d say F@H is now up and running
