I’m trying to get my network to share a printer. Do I have to load the drivers on each machine? Remember your talking to someone who has never done this before. Step by step would be much appreciated.
One computer shows the printer but it won’t print. Sorry I don’t know what I’m doing here and don’t know how to fix it:whiteflag: I dont even know what to post to begin with. Thanks Tony
Windows XP should install everything for you, or at least tell you that you need to do it. If however, it is Win98 then yes you will need to manually install drivers on the other machine.
The other thing you need to do (if using XP) is the enable file and print sharing. Goto the Control panel, open Security Centre, click on the Manage settings for Firewall. Open the Exceptions tab and make sure there is a tick in File and printer sharing box. Close all the above windows and hopefully, bingo!
Thanks Nighlord
Im using XP in fact im posting from one of the computers that will not print.

Checked this all is as quoted. (Didn’t work) I did have trouble with my router when I installed it and had to change it address. But since I could get on the internet, i assumed XP would pick it up? (thinking out loud)
OK. The thing with the router is odd, but if you can see the printer and surf the web then for these purposes it’s not important (famous last words!).
Perhaps you haven’t enabled printer to be shared on the server? On the machine with the printer physically connected to it (the server), open Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, click View Installed Printers, then Right click on your printer. In the pop-up menu click Sharing and make sure the Share this Printer button is ticked. Click OK and then close the window.
That enables the printer to be shared over the network (hopefully!)
