Is it reported system without the .exe or is it quoted as system.exe with ?

On Windows XP, its normal to have both “explorer.exe” and “System” listed in the (Windows Task Manager) Processes Tab.

I’ve never played with “System”, but I know from experience that you can highlight “explorer.exe” and click the End Process button. (When you do this, all of your desktop icons will disappear.)

To re-start explorer, click the Applications Tab, and then click the “New Task…” button at the bottom. A dialog will open. Type “explorer” (you don’t need the file extension) and then click the OK button.

This probably isn’t a solution to your problem, but you can do this to get a fresh copy of explorer.

I think Tom means that Explorer will be restarted from its location in the WINNT folder by restarting explorer.exe. I don’t think this is the cause of your problem, but may be a symptom of a different problem. Anything that hogs that much memory, suggests to me something like adware or spyware is running in the background that you can’t see.

Have you run a spy sweeper like ad-aware to check this? When did this problem originally start happening? Did it start after a download? I would always check this first. If it only happened very recently, have you tried running System Restore to go back to a previous good setup.

Other than that, if some of the processes that should be started are not appearing, possibly something has got corrupted and you might have to reinstall WinXP, or in the worst case, format your C drive and reload WinXP.

I would run a spy sweeper first, an anti-virus check next, then a System Restore.

well i dont wanna go that far :frowning:
i installed my computer like 3 weeks ago, and is was running prefectly and i was at my stage yestorday , remote controling my computer and it worked fine, and i came home and it started to be like stuck all the time …,
and i never download stuf without knowin what it is,
i use norton antivirus for like every file that comes in,
and i scan my pc ( 466 GB) like 3-4 times a week just to be sure
i’ll try a anti spyware … thing … mayby it helps

A good idea as a first starting point. Don’t forget to try the System Restore either. If it was working OK yesterday, this should revert it back to the good state.

shouldn’t i have made a thing like that …:sigh:

i have no clue at all how to do that … :frowning:

or it that done automaticly ?

start > run > type ‘msconfig’, click launch system restore, select restore to a previous checkpoint and find one that is from when you know the machine was working OK.

DT.

i ddint instal anything,
but i just had a message that i had that is the only thing i can remember,
that was an update from msn plus,
i use msn daily so i thought that was okay

but that cant be it …right ?

btw i got an good thing this time,
i used back up from 1 week ago and after quited explorer.exe and restarting it, it worked 100% normaly …
only if i have to do that everytime i reboot my computer … will get annoying

I personally don’t trust anything from MSN being OK, having had problems in the past. The amount of SPAM I got and spyware after setting up MSN Messenger has put me off using anything of theirs.

I’ve not used MSN for years now … not that that was your problem though

in fact anything that promises “extra fast enhanced superior blah blah” etc, gets ignored in favour of the old stuff that still works better

:o :o :sigh:
i only use msn plus and msn life …
and i never had any problem with it …:frowning:

is there any problem if i use hitman pro … before i get kicked in the ass again :stuck_out_tongue: :kickbum:

:whiteflag:

Could be a virus, that’s why I mentioned if system has the .exe on the end.

I can only quote it for XP but it should be without the .exe extension in XP

if you do the Ctrl ALT Del to bring up the task manager on the options menu select view and off that menu select ‘Select columns’ and check the check box for PID (Process identifier) and click ok.

Now your list should report with an extra column
On XP it should report a PID of 4 I would hather a guess under other MS opperating systems a typically low number as well.

If your running XP and its not 4 do a search on your harddrive for services.exe and report back its locations.

i did what u asked :

the system is good … hope u can find anything that isn’t good

  • hitman pro is on the way

System does not have the .exe so that’s fine you were indicating it had.

LogMeIn.exe Am I correct in saying you have your PC setup to have remote access ?
and if so any possibility that a remote machine is connected.

Plus there is 2 instances open of LogMeIn.exe one with PID 3160 and one with 744
the 1st shows a 6% CPU overhead that could indicate a logged in user ?

hamachi - Part of the above I believe

ramaint - another form of remote PC access maybe a second program.

i can see the problem, install folding to use 100% of that there processor.

(sorry i just dont think anyone has tried :pimp: him yet :stuck_out_tongue: )

i have seen people use msn plus before, i tried once, avg went WTF is this and got rid of it. never again!

Bully

Have you always had Daemon tools installed - sometimes that can be a problem causer
