reverse dns i think

hi all,

i finaly got round to getting my own domain… what i need to know is how do i get my domain to show in a

“/whois” on irc rather than my ip

i think its got something to do with reverse dns but im not totaly sure… the domain allready points to the static ip of the machine i use and thats fine…

any ideas??

You need a static IP.

Basically, youve either got to get your ISP to create a reverse lookup that maps your ip addy to your domain name, or, if they do not handle DNS for your domain, you have to be running your own DNS servers your end.

As already said an easy(ish) option is to get a static ip. However, using some of the dynamic ip offerings I am sure this is technically possible.

I’ve not got time to check out in full, but try the regulars of dyndns and no-ip.

Sure I’ve seen some people have dyndns in irc - cant think who at the moment.

DT.

I used this when i was running a couple domains from my connection http://dns2go.deerfield.com

iv got a static ip, have had for like ever… just wanna make my whois info on irc match my domain…

wyntrblue - you know when your on irc now and someon whois’ you?

Do they get back an ipaddress like 82.134.56.21 or do they get back a hostmask like dun-23-server-5.broadband.someisp.com

If its the former, then it looks like theres no DNS running for your IP address, so you could set up a DNS server at home.

If its the latter it means your ISP already has a reverse lookup record for your IP, and most ISP’s i’ve dealt with will not change that lookup for free, if at all! You can’t have 2 reverse look ups only one so if the isp got there first and created one, and they wont change it, then your stuck.

its the former, they get an ip…
