Seeking advice about moving wus.

Some may have noticed that I haven’t done any crunching for quite a while now. This is due to not having a phone connection at home at the moment (HUGE bill to pay off :frowning: ) Anyways, very soon I will hopefully have some upgraded machines running so am looking for the easiest way to transfer units from an internet connected machine to my computers. The internet connected machine belongs to a friend so I will probably get as many wus as I can onto a CD seeing as he is on broadband. The thing I need to know is how best to manage the downloaded units and the crunched units for returning.

You might want to check out SETI Hide program. It has a feature that allows you to import and export work unit to a floppy disk. Its just a simple click instead of making folders and copy and pasting them. I use if for 2 computers with no net conection and it makes the process quick and simple.

Thanks SJ761. I have used Seti Hide in the past so will take another look at it. Seeing as I will be using multiple machines to do the actual crunching anything that makes the whole procedure easier is certainly welcome.

This is how i did it before i got broadband.

  1. Machine at work with setigate configured for my account downloads tones of units.
  2. Use the export unit function.
  3. Copy exported units from the ‘export’ folder to medium of choice (CD-RW in my case)
  4. Inport units to machine at home running setigate, that then feeds all other computer on home LAN.
  5. Upload results by dialup connection…

Just remember that the attributes maybe set to “read only” by default if your using CDR’s, that catches some people out.

Yeah, been caught out by that before in the past. However, not as bad as trying to copy a 4gig video file to another machine, wondering why it tells me it can’t copy until, after multiple attempts I realise that I am copying from NTFS to FAT32 and there is a 2gig limit with FAT32
