server 2003 network strangeness

hi all,

i have a puzzler here and could use some advice…
i have a server 2003 machine that within the control panel network conections is showing no connections.

if i do an ipconfig /all i can see the network card and it has all the correct settings…

anyone know how to get the gui info back?

cheers

anything useful in the device manager options for the card in question?

worth reinstalling drivers or the old disable/enable trick in the device manager ?

nope according to the dev manager the card is installed and correctly configured… its just not available in the network options within the windows gui

(times like this i much prefer *nix)

Check that your workstation service is running in computer management. Check that Client for Microsoft Networking is installed in Network Properties.

workstation service is running and on automatic…

i cant check if client for microsoft networking is installed as there are no networks showing in the network connections window.

anyone else?

Reaply SP2?

i will try that in the morning juggy and let you know

Also check that the NIC is enabled in the bios. You will still see the device in Device Manager, but nothing in Network Places.

no option to disable or enable the network in the bios, and reinstalling sp2 didnt work either. am now reinstalling windows over the top of the current borked install so that should sort it out lol

WOW to other things to check…cable would be next on list…and well try assigning a IP to it…I would then open case and slap in a PCI net card to see if that pops up also.
Reinstall is last always on my list!

hey step thanks for the thoughts…

cable is fine as if i did i ping to any other machine on the network i got a responce and no dropped packets.

i can assign network settings via the cli but as there is nothing showing inthe gui i have no way to do it through that.

i have tried a different nic card and that also was visiable in the ipconfig but not showing in the gui.

as the machine had to go live at 9am this morning i didnt have any more time to faff with it

on a side note, i did find an m$ artical about resetting the network settings manualy and followed that too, but it also didnt help lol

joys of microshaft

How about logging on with a different user account?

ncpa.cpl ??

Also be aware that SP2 installs and configures some network optermisation goodness, which quite frankly can kill network performance - see kb948946 (thanks Bill)
