Seti@home Classic will shutdown soon

We’re basically waiting on some new hardware to arrive
which will vastly increase our ability to handle all the
current SETI@home classic users. These items will arrive
early in the new year. Once everything is configured,
everybody’s being shifted to BOINC and classic will be
turned off for good.

Of course, with this new hardware, we will also be able to
turn BOINC pending credit back on.

Keeping classic SETI@home running forever will actually
be physically (as well as fiscally) impossible. We need
to cannibalize that hardware for BOINC, or turn it off
as our server closet cannot handle any more heat from the
excess machinery.

Sir Ulli

Will we be doing another spam-o-gram to our members letting them know to switch to BOINC when Seti Classic ends? I’m worried about the ones who don’t visit the forums thinking that the crunching is over.

On the bright side, if we can get everyone BOINCing, we might be able to regain our slipped position in SETI Boinc (assuming the other teams are already mostly BOINCers).

Ah well. It was gonna happen soon.

Nooooooooooooooo

I was going to switch back to this when Lifemapper ended.

Argghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Well guess all good things come to an end sooner or later. First Lifemapper and now Seti Classic.

Do you find it hard to score then? :kiss3:

We all knew it was comming eventually. So lets make this a chance to make some better crunching in seti under boinc. I don’t see apeoblem with the scoring system. Everyone gets scored by the same system so who cares  Lets just crunch and stomp :stomp:

I quite like the larger numbers involved with SETI Boinc.

Going to be able to type better at the end of this month when the straight jacket comes off.

Sir Ulli

When it draws to a close thats probably a good time for me to call it a day for DC stuff.
No way I can run Boinc on company hardware and I’m not sure I want it on the home stuff that much either.

I was teetering on getting some 64 bit hardware in for the next upgrade but for the games I run an XP2500 with a half decent graphics card is more than adequate.

Not going to bang on about it but don’t be suprised at the absence of Mr Terrence F. Witt Esq. on the BOINC bandwagon.

Its been fun in a unique way

++STOP

There are other projects you can run, isnt there?

:woot: Nice one Ulli :funknana:
…and a Happy Xmas to you too. Cheers :grin3:

I switched to boinc as soon as I found out that Classic was getting shut down soon.

Wunderschon!! :grin3:

Top Crunching Ulli

It will be a shame to see SETI Classic close down, it was a sweet programme and fun into the bargain.
I too had reservations when starting BOINC, seemed a bit complex but then its doing a more complex job. The best bit imo is its ability to support any research project that wants to use it and still have one credit system. We can all crunch our favourite projects yet still have one overall league table as a team with as many sub tables as there are projects.

For anyone new to BOINC here’s a list of projects - something for everyone.

SETI - http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/ - Well we all know what that’s about.

Climate Prediction - http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/ - Investigation into the approximations in climate models with a view to improving the accuracy of predicting the effects of CO2 in global warming.

Predictor - http://predictor.scripps.edu/ - Currently in Beta test, likely to launch Jan 05 - Predicting the structure of protiens from their sequence.

Pirates at Home - http://pirates.vassar.edu/ - Developing screensaver for Einstien@ home and generally playing with BOINC

Einstein@home project - http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ -(Alpha test ) Looking for pulsars using data from the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors.

LHC - http://lhcathome.cern.ch/ - Currently out of work - Assisting with callibration and investigation of the high energy particle collider at Cern

Astropulse (Future) - http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/ap/ - Re-analysing the SETI Classic data with a different programme looking for fast broadband signals from evaporating black holes, pulsars and maybe ET.

What have I missed? - Anyone else got anything to add here.

Edit
Oh… and don’t forget to join the team for each project you join
/Edit

When Seti comes to a close, I will only be moving a couple of machines over to BOINC, I need to cut back on the leccy bill! ($120/ month)

Ouch.

No matter m8, crunch when & how you can.

Also don’t forget to use the same user name and email address for each project you join, so that your stats will all come together…

Allow me to have some fun stoking the fire with some pre-announcement info:

  1. I started up all three splitters just to make sure they were working nicely in tandem. One splitter was plenty to handle our current demand. We cannot “build up” workunits as we currently only store about 500,000 on disk at any given time (when we get about this amount, the splitters go to sleep). But now I have at least proven that when demand increases, we’ll be able to keep up.

  2. New equipment has been acquired (and actually arrived earlier than expected). Much setup/testing needs to happen before we make any wild claims. The good news is that this stuff is in our lab now (when we expected it to arrive in early January). I don’t celebrate Christmas, nor travel during this time of year, so I (and other team members) will be working on and off over the next two weeks trying to bring all the new servers on line.

Feel free to use this information to adjust your predictions about when we are going to shut down classic SETI@home.
