Vista gets a ‘lukewarm’ response, is that people burning the cd’s by anychance ? I have the hardware to run it, and it’s got a lot of legwork to do before it can replace XP imo. I think it’s time to learn Java programming so I can work on Linux only yet be cross platform.
DT.
He added that PC makers could get hold of licences until 2009 if they bought them from third-party suppliers rather than Microsoft.
So maybe no hurry yet.
Still in process of installing first Vista box, so too early to say if I can get used to it as “main box” use. But on user interface alone it is no more annoying than XP once configured.
My first quirk is if I type in “net time \othercomputer /set /y” it fails along the line of incorrect rights or something. Without the /set /y it can correctly read the time from the other PC, so something blocking it from locally changing. I thought I was an admin?
Cripes. I’ve still got a number of machines in the office on 2k. Feeling a bit outdated
To answer my earlier problem, it was UAC blocking it. However it wasn’t popping up a box to say if I wanted to do that, it just refused outright. Turning UAC off then allowed it to work.
And I still have win2k on my main box at home, but seriously am looking at upgrading as more and more software is no longer supporting it, esp since Vista came out.
Iwouldn’t take that as a hard and fast end date for XP.
Win98 got another three years lease of life so I would expect XP to get the same especially given the very slow corporate take up of Vista.
