Well the big question is do I go and buy vista oem when I get a new hard drive or do I carry on for a bit with xp. This will be my first self bought OS .
So is it worth it?
/me waits for dammo to enter the room :Pimp:

I think its unwise to quit wow and talk about vista in the same week… too much change
Vista, same as any new o/s, loves new hardware, drivers are getting better all the time, some software doesn’t work, most does. Personally, any issues i’ve had with it have been solved by a spot of our friend google
I say go for it. I purchased Ultimate and haven’t been dissapointed apart from my webcam not working.
Home premium 32 bit installed on one box here. Looks nice, runs ok. Personally I wouldn’t want to use it on less than 2 GB ram. As always with a new OS, you have to spend some time figuring out why nothing works and how to stop all the “security” stuff to let it work again. Haven’t really pushed my install beyond that…
Safe option is that if XP is working fine, why change yet? Until the new features become “must have” rather than “nice to haves” it isn’t really essential. DX10 might be the main swinger once games start needing it.
The reason I’m getting it is I’m shall be purchasing an XBox in the near future and want to use the media streaming. Now currently upgrading to MP11 would possibly be an issue and since I’ll be buying a new hard drive I was thinking why not. If I’m going to buy an OS it may as well be a new one.
I’ve got the hardware to support Vista easy enough. 8800GTX, 2GB Ram, A64 X2 and shed loads of hard drive space.
So no definite No’s yet…Looks like I’ll be making a purchase.
NO
but then I’m a developer who likes to know what his machine is actually doing …
I loved the beta testing, so much worked nicely, few bugs. Then on my desktop and a work machine I had Vista and just couldn’t live with it at all. I suppose I’ll always be someone who chooses the windows classic theme though
DT.
I’m currently mainly using my vista box for media center. I haven’t used XP MCE so can’t compare. Given choice got getting XP MCE or Vista home premium, thought I’d take a gamble on the newer. It certainly does work nicely as a mp3 player.
Next choice (assuming you’re getting OEM version) is 32 or 64 bit
in walks Damski,
I’m definatly of the opinion that if your hardware can support it and the apps you use will run then go for it, yes as with anything new it’ll have it’s quirkes, you’ll you off looking for something in one location and find it in another, but a few weeks of use and you’ll have worked it all out.
On the 32/64 question I’d go 32, though it will make your hardware work more for it’s money it’s just not quite there with the driver support yet.
Has your bro not got Vista, if it’s a new drive, install it, don’t put in the key, select the version you have and your good for 30 days testing, seeing you can configure it and set it up the way you want.
my 2p and personaly I feel a balanced 2p
well I can’t see it being worse than the 98 -> xp switch to be honest. I doubt I’d have any difficulty with it. Always good to try something new too
As for 32 or 64 I was going to chose 32 over 64 as quite a few games do not support 64 especially CnC3:thumbsup:
CNC3 works fine in Vista 64.
I have not found any modern games that will not work (of the ones I play).
More and more games (HL2, FarCry UT2004) have 64bit versions which use your hardware that is running in second gear in 32bit OS’s.

one more reason to go to 64 I suppose… Just as well I’m in no rush to get it.
Well after having a google and looking at this thread on Anandtech seems there are very few problems with vista64. Looks like it could be the one to go for. Also looks it may be worth getting another 2Gb of ram
I’m really not interested in Vista at all - I use my machine to work on, so I’m not prepared to donate money to Microsoft for something which is basically updated with Digital Rights Malarky to line the pockets of the entertainment industry.
I still don’t have a really good Linux installation, though, so one can appreciate that for all their faults Microsoft have done a remarkable job to to make the things that do work well in Windows work as well as they do.
As manufacturers begin to roll out machines with Linux preinstalled, the balance will begin to shift, though. Look at how IE gained a huge market share despite never having been a superior product.

I have the XBox and Ultimate, MS doesn’t support DivX or XviD on the 360 yet:( It’s the only thing holding it back and TVersity doesn’t run very well on Vista.
I’d hold back until 360 has DivX built in through a soft update.
Time for a new analogy.
I have a kettle, it holds 8 cups of water and switches off when its boiled.
I rarely make more than 4 cups of coffee at a time.
Argos sells one that does 10 cups of water.
I only drink one cup at at time.
When I cannot achieve something under win2k or linux I might upgrade.
Until then I’ll stick with the 8 cup as the coffee tastes the same.
nice analogy TFW
… me waits for someone to mention coffee perculators
I have a car, it gets me from a to b in about the same time as any car stuck in trafic.
I like the look of a shiney new car that uses twice as much fuel to do the same journey but i still want it
When I was young I had a rabbit. It ate greens and crapped all day long.
Now my daughter has a rabbit - different rabbit, same habits
If I wanted to type on my PC I would have stuck with a PCW from Amstrad.
I play games; I like to play games; playing games with a high frame rate is very important to me.
When Crysis comes out I will be playing that on my very expensive PC, in 64 bit, on Vista, with dual (might be quad if AMD pull their fingers out) core, with a nice frame rate.
Have to run Vista with at least 2 gig for games, but I would recommend the extra 2 gig as newer games are ram eating monsters (eg. Dark Messiah).
You can get 4 gig kits now (2* 2gig about £180 for PC26400), which run better than running 4 sticks in most Mobos.
