Anyone tried any other desktop managers on K/Ubuntu? I’ve given Gnome with Beryl a go which is what I am using at the mo, and have put E17 on, which doesn’t work with Beryl
Just wondering if anyone has had much experience with any others…I also have KDE on (what can I say…I like it, just a bit hungry on the system…)
E17 is nice and I believe someone somewhere is getting a E17 based Ubuntu going.
I downloaded and tried out Ultimate Ubuntu the other day. Nice download. Large at 1.7Gb but it has a nice default theme for Gnome and installs all kinds of stuff with Ubuntu saving downloading it later.
Might be worth a shot?
I went back to the standard Ubuntu install after trying the Live CD as though it was nice, I didn’t want all the apps.
I have heard of someone making an Ubuntu with E17 on, but havn’t followed it, as there is already Elive…which I have tried and liked alot…as it’s Debian based it should be familiar to any Ubuntu user…
I was stuck to a really low spec comp…with an on-board graphics card, and Elive looked smooth and ran impressively well, so it had my vote, unfortunately it was still the development edition, and was still very buggy at that time. Besides, although I like the window manager I like the ability to return to normal gnome or KDE.
On that not, would love to see someone get E17 spinning on a Beryl/compiz cube
Yeah I found Elive a couple of months ago and posted it here. Very nice but I’d have to run more tests on it before I could consider switching to it over Ubuntu.
I know what you mean…I went through a phase of trying different distros ( well that is the point after all )
Tried Suse, (K)ubuntu, ubuntu, elive, knoppix, Oracle, CentOS, Freespire, Fedora (and just tied F7)…yada yada yada…
But no matter what Ubuntu/Kubuntu always came out on top, if not for the quality of distro the Community support…I will keep playing with other distros, to see what they have to offer, and if there is something I like I will get it working on Ubuntu, but I don’t think I will ever switch.
Might at a push run another on a different machine.
Thats my thoughts exactly. I think everyone finds a distro they like and pretty much sticks with it. I know Mojo and DT rave about FC but I’ve never got on with it. From trying others, I prefer Debian based distros. In fact I’ve never played with Debian… (Must download that and Vm it soon then…)
I tried the Last Debian but not etch…It was about 5CD’s and a long install, but after it was on there were 100’s of apps on there…Never even opened 2/3 of them…
It was more than I needed, however it came with the Distro builder. So one day, maybe I will be at a stage where I can make my prefered setup for all to use…I was interested on Distrowatch to see a new Gaming Linux, which gave me the idea for a (G)ubuntu, where it’s setup and targeted towards Gamers…might be worth a thought or two
Never saw it…Thankx…maybe when I get Damski’s box’s off him i’ll give it a go.
