I was just thinking that with the 4MB of L2 plus the 2GB of RAM and whatever it want for virtual…I may get a bit more out of it running the 64 bit.
I’ve found (up to V7) that 32bit had better hardware/driver support… it probably depends what you’re planning on doing with it as to how much support you need.
if in doubt, try 64-bit, and if you can’t get something working, try 32.
I went with 32 bit only as at the time I had a lot of older boxes which didn’t do 64 bit. And I thought keeping them all the same might help. But all the old ones are pretty much retired now.
The question of support was also a concern for me, paralleling the question for windows. I believe the 32/64 compatibility is better on linux than windows but I don’t have 1st hand experience in either…
Hmmm…I’ll have to see then. Maybe I’ll try the 64 as a test bed (not going to do a ton with Ubuntu right away)…though if I want to run any Wine stuff, I’ll likely have to run 32 Decisions, decisions
had a play last night, got the dual-monitor thing sorted finally with the help of Envy
http://www.albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
and wine set up with wine-doors
http://www.wine-doors.org/wordpress/
fired up WoW and got everything but the 3d graphics, so I’ll play with that later
interestingly wine-doors has installed DirectX9 - so I think that means I should be able to play ~any~ directX9 game on hardy heron
Never dug deeply into wine, but isn’t it one of the eternal internet “under construction” type projects? Be interesting to see what sort of success rate you get.
When I tyried ubuntu last time Wine ran CS, CSS, EVE and Oblivion, had to tinker a bit with CSS but it worked in the end
Hmm… guess I’ll have to have another closer look at it. Windows games is the main reason I stuck with MS. Any luck with steam?
64 bit and core2 works luberly need to set some time asside to fiddle with it and WINE away
that wine-doors site had an entry for steam too, so I would go with “probably”
well my first task is to get Photoshop working with wine and who knows…there may be a migration to Linux here . Though I do need to figure out mounting a folder from my nas so I can get to amarok to play my music across the network
Just to note - it’s a bit slow with F@h
Top 2 8.04, bottom 2 7.10 - all same spec and top 2 were giving same frame times as bottom 2 prior to upgrade…
My system is going to be a bugger to do a dual boot (stupid vista, ms disk managment and the way the restore partition is situated on my drive ) Oh well…
I’m not likely going to switch over for crunching, but I’m throwing on virtual machine and a Kubuntu (either 7.10 or 8.04) so that maybe the next time I get a machine, it will be pure linux.
Btw, just thought I would let you know that I managed to get 7.10 shoe-horned into a VM console Still some bugs to work out between the two (like the network connection) but other than that, I’m playing with Linux again
Joined the world of Kubuntu, now starting to delve. Sacked ms! Happily crunching away now having been systemless for a while! Also up and about after nearly dying - rushed to hospital.
Still dealing with the things I came out with but didn’t have going in! At least I’m ALIVE!
Crikey, that’s a bit scary m8!! Hope your getting better :xfinger:
 Droid!
If anyone can tell me the best way to get DVD’s up and running on Kubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) that’d be good. Managed to get MP3’s playing, got a little more tinkering to get fully functional, but oh what fun!
And I’ve recently joined the
(Robin Hood) Brigade, along with the loyal Sheffy, lol!
