USB HDD issue

So I have a USB disk plugged into the back of my media PC. Last night fired the PC up to find that although Windows can see the drive it thinks there’s no file system on there any more and it needs a format.

Is there any way to get the data back off it? It’s DVD rips so worst case I can stil and pump the DVDs in again but I can think of better ways to spend my time!

If you’ve tried the easy things first like plug it into a different USB socket, or even a different computer without luck, then I’d suggest extracting the drive from the enclosure and connecting it directly into a desktop. That assumes the data is still intact and there’s some USB funny preventing it from being seen. Wont help if the disk really is corrupt, at which point you might try some disk recovery tool but I don’t have experience of those.
