Vista 64 and F@H

:whiteflag:
Anyone get F@H running on a Vista 64-bit machine? I’ve tried both the SMP beta and the “tried and true” console client but neither works (for different reasons).

The SMP beta never gets started because I can’t seem to get that initial module registered correctly. I have made sure my workstation account has a password and I’ve made sure the programs in the folder are all set to run as Administrator.

The console client starts, downloads the core and WU, then starts crunching. After a few minutes however, the WU aborts with some error about results deviating too far from the norm. It then loads another WU and tries again. Lather, Rinse, and Repeat.

Any help would be appreciated.

the easiest way to do it if I remember correctly is to disable the UAC and should allow you to install it all properly.

I’ll have a shot tomorrow on a test rig for you if you want, that UAC is a right pain for apps where the installer has not been updated :frowning:

Finally found the instructions I used http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1031236236&postcount=2

Looks like disabling the UAC did it. It’s the only thing I changed this afternoon and now the SMP client is crunching away! Thank ye kindly, Efaill! :tiphat:

A pleasure good sir :tiphat: Vista64 is a bit more paranoid that 32 it seems on installing things. Took me an age to figure out why mine wouldn’t

The current SMP WU is averaging 1% completed every 10 minutes or so. I should be getting my first completed SMP WU in about 8 hours.

what machine is that running on?
what machine is that running on?
QX9650 Core2Extreme (stock 3 GHz) on a MSI P7N Diamond mobo.

I’m not OC’ing it yet because there are a few quirks I have to iron out first. The power supply seems “iffy” so I don’t want to push it any harder. The computer currently runs fine until you want to restart/reboot. You have to turn power off at the P/S for about 2 minutes before it will let you restart/reboot. I’m blaming the P/S because when it misbehaves, the P/S fan never comes out of full speed fan test during POST.

Just adding my thanks for that link Efaill

weeee more folders :woot:

I’m a lazy folder, couldn’t get it to work easy so gave up till someone else figured it out

Either I’m having an extremely bad run of luck with defective WU’s or something is still wrong with my setup. As of this morning I still hadn’t successfuly finished a WU. The first one failed after 78% (ouch!) a bunch lasted only a minute or so, one lasted to 42% and the current one is still working but it’s still got 53% to go.:xfinger:

I had a few Wu’as that exited at around 89% completed last week, from reading on the folding forums seems if you stop and then restart the client at a point before it terminates it will complete the wu, worked for me.

Curly
I tried the “exit before it fails and restart” gambit, but they still fail.
:sigh:

is this your new rig? could it be a lack of juice ?

Yep I had a sour overclock give very similar results to what you have there. There is also however a little random error now and again with Vista64 that can cause the odd error and unit to end early. I’d give your voltages fro cpu and mem a check when your under load just to make sure.

Got my first complete WU last night. The only thing I did differently was I played Sins of the Solar Empire for about a five hour stretch last night and this caused the WU percent complete to increment only every 17 minutes instead of every 9 minutes. Could the processor just be too fast?

I’d like to just add to this, this method works about a zilliion times better than the virtual machine running unbunto method… core priority’s work properly and you can watch a HD film without having to shut it down.

I contacted MSI regarding a different problem I’m seeing and they wrote right back suggesting a different P/S. So I’m going to upgrade to a 1 KW p/s. If that don’t do the trick then they’re going to replace the mobo.

The symptom I’m getting that involves MSI is that I can’t restart or reboot normally. I have to turn off all power (including the P/S switch) for a couple of minutes before restarting or it hangs before starting POST. :furious:

P.S. I still have only one fully completed WU since using the SMP client. I’ve been using QFIX on some of the partials to get partial credit.
