Wireless Problems

Since first setting up the wireless connection it keeps having little cut outs every now and then. This has never bothered me before because it comes back within a matter of seconds but now im playing Guild Wars, i need a constant connection, im particularly annoyed now as I just got near to the end of a mission and it cut out on me  The strange thing is, my laptop never has this problem and its about a metre away from the PC.

What could be causing this problem. The wireless card is a Belkin 802.11g and the router is a GWART Guru. Also, the PC downsatirs has the same wireless card but never suffers this although it is right next to the router. Why would the signal strength keep changing on my PC. Its about 2 metres away from the router (router downstairs, PC upstairs, ceiling/floor separating obviously).

It is probable that you have contention between the two machines using the same channel and the pc closest to the router (stongest signal) wins.

Try disabling the wireless adapter on the pc downstairs while you use the machine upstairs and see if it makes a difference.

All three machines on the network are running on the same channel (11). My router doesnt give me the option to choose a separate channel for each machine. I shall try disconnecting the machine downstairs. Is there normally a way of setting which machine has priority of the connection?

There is not normally any way (that I know of) to ensure which machine has priority: you could temporaily disable the mac address of the other machines in the router, but it’s a sledge hammer to crack a nut. In any case it may not work because the signal from the upstairs machine may still be blocked by the rf signal from downstairs machine regardless if it is connected to the network.

The other thing, is that channel 11 a default. It is possible that there are other networks in range that could also be using the same channel. So, maybe another thing to try is to setup on a different channel and see if the problem goes away.

Channel 11 is the default. Im going to move the router away from the downstairs PC so its about the same distance, maybe closer, to mine. I’ll try changing the channel as well.

also, think power, check your card power settings to see if the cards being powered down?

Power saving is off on both cards, the transmitted rate is set to auto on both im not sure what it means but the setting ‘2.4GHz Preamble’ is also set to auto.

The support for this router really sucks, the company doesnt have anything half decent on its website and the manual basically just tells you how to plug the damn thing in, and it doesnt even explain that clearly

Another point, I keep getting failed MSDU’s, (i have 3 at the moment). Could this be the problem.

OK this is really starting to !%$$ me off now. On the same bloody mission and it cuts out again. This is the system log, I presume you read from the bottom up.
