XP, Linux and Crossover

Right…

Last night we set up a router between my bro’s machine and mine. I could then access the web from his PC thus not bothering with wireless network.

This made me think and I installed Ubuntu linux…

Anyhow now he’s away I cant turn his PC on cos he’s password protected it.

So using a crossover cable I connected to my dad’s PC.

Now I couldn’t get linux to connect so a re install of Ubuntu and a manual setting up of the network was required. Thats done.

But Ubuntu will still not connect to the web. Do I have to do anything at windows end? I used the right IP address setting up etc. And the cable is brand new…

to get around your bros passwording  take the bios battery out and put it back in  usually works !!

You have to enable internet sharing , with XP use the network wizard in control panel.

Think I’ve done that but doesn’t appear to have worked…

What have you set the ip settings to and what is the ip of all the machines?

Well my dad’s PC is 192.168.2.1

Mine would be 192.168.2.2 Linux is set as a static ip address at the minute because when I installed Linux, it couln’t set it up with DCHP…

Another re install of Ubuntu and no luck.

Might have got somewhere on the settings on the XP machine though becuase LAN 4 is now connected at 10 Mbps…

if your just using the internet connection shareing from wiundows you have to have dhcp. If you don’t it wont work.

Right Ok.

Doing a test to see if I can set up the windows to windows network. If so I’ll reboot into Linux and try putting it back to DCHP and see if it’ll connect.

is it an internal modem ? in your set up you be beter off with an external modem to the router then conected to all computers that way all systems have access no mater whos powered up. some the new routers even have modems biuld it making it even easyer . Then all u need do hook up router to the line comeing in and hook up all computers to it.

Dad has the external USB modem connected to his machine. I’m trying to by pass the wireless network we have.

I have a router but no ethernet cables long enough to hook it all up.

I’m using a 7m long crossover cable…all the ethernet cables I have are 3m I do believe.

Windows is also refusing to set up a network. Been at this for ages now so it’s migthily pissing me off really. Looks like I’ll have to wait until my bro gets back and see if I can get Linux to run via that.

now not sure this will help but some times the internet conection comes in on one connection and the network can be on a difernt one specialy when trying do it way your are try going to the system the inernet is comeing in on AKA your dadys system right click the network places icon and click propertys if there are two or more local area conections or what ever the main local and then the modems showing try highlighting both and right click then click bridge conetions that should then give access to the local network to the internet

Tried briding them to no sucess it seems.

I might try again tomorrow but for today I’m leaving it be.

did u try rebooting after your dads system after bridging them ?

yeah.

Seems like it was a IP address something that wasn’t working on both systems.

When you set up ICS on a windows pc it sets up a DHCP server at the same time . Did you set the gateway and DNS server ont he linux box to the IP of the pc with the modem?

Yeah.

As far as I was aware, my dad’s PC was 192.168.2.1 but on closer inspection thats the IP of the wireless router of which has noting to do with this network.

I’ll have to look for his IP address fully but I think it’s dynamic…

anougher thing to think about lot of times the routers have dhcp biult in also and if you are useing a windows based dhcp from ics at same time might have problems usealy only good to have one dhcp server or u might confuse things at times . you may have to go into the routers set up and disable it . or disable the windows one so u only have one trying to issue out ip addresses
