AntiVirus software.....

Is Norton completely useless?

Been having a few “issues” with my rig the last few days. I have discovered the lexbac trojan on it, and plro.exe whatever that is. Also some bloody js.menger.worm!

I run Norton 2003 with auto update. Seems like it’s not doing all that good a job.

Any alternatives that are more useful than a chocolate fireguard?

AVG does the business for me

Somewhere near that link will get you a free version of anti virus software.

Downloading now…cheers. Can’t be any worse than Norton, lol.

Thats the point I started from, I thought having paid for the stuff it was mine for ever. I was horrified when it said " your subscription has expired" and went hunting.

Best clear up rate was a PC with 18 different viruses, and almost 800 infected files, cleaned it up enough to back up the important files.

yes!

as TFW said try AVG it is alot better than norton.

Get this!!!

I have Norton on auto update. I just manually updated, to double check, and ran a check on the c-drive.

Nothing.

Uninstalled, and installed AVG.

It’s found 2 already!!!

Norton, you really do suck.

AVG, you’re my new friend.

AVG is the nuts, I’ve used it for a while now… free and better than Norton

In a few weeks time when we install the new server(s) at work I’ll report on the network version.

DT.

I’ve just downloaded it after reading this thread, was wondering which virus scanner to get :). Will get it installed!

I really can’t believe that a pay-to-use anti-virus program has failed where a freebie has triumphed.

Beggars belief.

I really am quite annoyed at Norton.

Thanks TFW, a timely post. My Norton subscription ran out a week ago and I’ve been fretting about whether to renew it.
Free Software !!. No Contest

That was the only bummer for me, not being able to install the free version on my Win2k3 server at home… need to find something else :frowning:

Just finished scanning with AVG…found 6 in total!!!

3 backdoors & 3 downloaders.

On the other hand, my Father-in-Law has just got a worm on his AVG protected PC. It was McAfee that found and destroyed the worm.

All anti-virus products trip up from time to time - none are perfect. However, in independent tests in a dedicated IT Security magazine, Norton always comes in the top two or three.

Myself, I will be looking at McAfee next time.

a good thing is that it can be run along side any other AV software because it does not pick everything up

I’ll concede that point, some viruses attack AV software, AVG seems low on the list of virus writers targets at the moment. I’m sure that will change if AVG starts to give them a spanking.

Installed, scanned, No viruses detected
Dunno where you boys go surfing

Run the network version of Norton at work… has some nice tools like remote install and stuff.

Personally though, I’ve “uninstalled” it from my machine (2 hours deleting reg keys so the server still thinks it’s on there  ) and stuck AVG on. Naturally being a security conscious personage it’s advantageous having 2 AV progs on your network

I tend to run Norton on some machines, AVG on others.

They are both pretty good but this way if something tries to spread across my network and one misses it, the other will pick it up.

9hours later… it’s still scanning meh drive
