Well the 9100e crashed and burned.
Dropped in 4 core Phenom II 965 3.4 Ghz Black edition.
Darn thing runs cooler at 100% then the 9550 at stand still.
May get the 9550 crunching again.
Got the 965 crunching, yet it is listed as an unknown AMD cpu.
Bit weird. Do the projects have a database of processors that they use to identify anything attached to a machine? I must admit that older versions of CPU-Z sometimes have issues with newer processors.
Curious Eqad, is it also the black edition? Could that be the reason.
Never mind I just saw your sig.
So was yours a PIB with their new heat sink? Still can’t believe how cool it runs.
Although I hadn’t updated to new version of Boinc. doing it next.
I’m not using the new heatsink (it’s still in the box). I’d bought a Zalman CNPS 9700 NT cooler for it when I bought the CPU. Before I added a CUDA card, my max temps under full load were around 47C. With the CUDA card working too I hit 51C. I could get that to run cooler, but I don’t want to force my CPU fan into “turbine” mode due to the noise. I leave it on CPU control.
Out of curiosity, does your BIOS recognize the CPU correctly?
I think I remember seeing the code for this part in the Boinc client, the fix might be updated your bios as I think it pulls the cpuid straight from there. Does it appear unknown CPU when you boot?
You know I never even bothered to check the BIOS since it didn’t indicate any posting issues, used other programs such as speccy that detected it properly.
Well behold, went to BIOS setting and yes it does list it as a AMD unknown at 800mz.
Ok I get around pretty good, (why do I feel a joke coming) but ignorance comes into play on how to update BIOS.
Dummies guide please.

There will normally be a pretty comprehensive guide to BIOS updates on the board manufacturers website - normally on the support pages, along with the latest BIOS for your board and the utilities needed, some allow you to do so on-line with the relevant tools installed.
Other then not being listed by BIOS, is it really an issue since comp runs fine?
Update from Gateway:

Of course for a hefty fee.
Well I see no issues, yet saying it is 800Mhz when it is 3.4Ghz does concern me if I am getting everything out of the CPU.
It looks like it has defaulted to a multiplier of 4, so it is running at 4 X 200Mhz 800MHz instead of 3.4GHz. It should be running at 17 X 200Mhz…
If you go into BIOS does it allow you to manually select the Multiplier?
With it being a Gateway OEM Motherboard they might not have updated the BIOS for Phenom II CPU’s, But I have a Gigabyte motherboard with the same chipset quite happily running my Phenom 1055T hex core!
a few Google attempts on “what motherboard gateway dx4200” and it could be a foxconn, who are normally pretty good with bios updates.
Try sisoft sandra to id the board, or some other similiar tool to get you a board and chipset. If it’s no good with the chip you have now, what have you got to lose by trying to flash a new bios?
ok, so a little more research and some looking at bios dumps, I think the problem you are going to face is the 125W chips are simply not going to work in the board, there is a bios for the 945, but it depends on if you do have the board I’ve found for that Gateway model, Google “Foxconn Bengal RS780 phenom 965” and read the post on mydigitallife
The heck with it, tired of dealing with it; so took it down to my local geek shop ( a friend of mine) told him get me a good quality board and have it ready tomorrow.
Wanted to know what I wanted to spend, and of course I said nothing. Being a smart a$$ like me said, “well its ready. you got what you paid for.”
Told Robert to keep it under 200.00 installed and the deal was done.
So no crunching on the 956 till tomorrow afternoon.
I did most my crunching on that box, it was just getting to stressful on the old cpu with other programs I had running. Main reason I pulled crunching off, so I’ll take the heat and looking forward to see what it can do.
So have you been satisfied with the 956BE?
Anyhow I’ll let you know what motherboard he decides to install.
Does explain why it was running so cool. ~smiles~

With the 965 being a Black Edition it has an unlocked multiplier so can easily be set to run at higher speeds…
I’ve got my 1055T 2.8GHz CPU running currently running at 3.35 GHz nice and stable, but have had it running at 3.5Ghz just by upping the clock and tweaking some other settings. A lady of your intelligence should be able to manage an decent overclock on your cracking new CPU…
These Phenom II’s are cracking CPU’s compared to the original Phenoms…
The standard cooler on the BE Phenom II’s is also quite decent, so you shouldn’t have a problem with high temeratures.
Now you got me excited! Can hardly wait to give it a go on Docking.
Thanks Eqad and all for the input!
I’ve got a 945 (2.8GHz) running at 3.2GHz at that got an RAC of 4500+ running 24/7… These Phenom II’s are quite handy at Docking… My 1055 Hex Core is floating around the top 20 in RAC… currently about 10th, up there with the Xeons, and top end i7’s
