It definitely looks like it will be a close run thing. A sweepstake might be in the offing. 50p/50cents a go?
By my calculation with the way things are going we will both hit 1.5 million the same exact day! OMFG what a race! :driving:
:realmad: :crash: :cussing: :bsod:
My dsl connection went down last night at about 8pm local time. Still not back up yet. Not sure if itās the modem router or the line.
This morning, the modem was synching intermittently, but then dropping out after just a second or two.
I have a few days of cache in each machine, but Iām dead in the water for reported results until it comes back (posting this from the office).
At current burn rate, unless it comes back up within 2-3 days, Iām a toast.
Damn that is bad news, I suspect you will be back online soon.
Well, itās Thursday lunchtime and still no dsl signal since Tuesday night.
Replaced the modem and the same fault is present. Performed all the usual tricks and no show. Checked the exchange for outages - all ok.
Phoned the service provider this morning and not really getting much joy: they need me to be in front of a machine connected to the modem to try āa few thingsā. :argue:
So, I have about 2 days cache left before the farm runs dry. The Major will overtake me tomorrow unless it comes back up sooner. Just now, I reckon over 40k CS waiting to be uploaded and reported, so the race to 1.5M is not overā¦as long as the connection comes back!:xfinger:
does your next door neighbour not have a net connection that you could āborrowā for a day
Think nightlord lives in the middle of nowhere
good luck on getting DSL back online
Cant you get onto dial up for a bitā¦
Imagine trying to upload all that dat on dial up
Sounds like Divine intervention?
Me thinks there is a :bigdump: in your future.
All I can say is:
  :furious: :furious: :sigh: :sigh: :cussing: :cussing: :help: :help:
Customer services were of course very helpfulā¦not
So itās back to dial-up for at least 3 working days (or longer so they say)
Gonna give it a go uploading from one machine, see how slow that is. If it works, Iāll try internet connection sharingā¦that will be fun with the farm  and then try reporting all the other machines. Maybe set the cache to 10 days.
You know the daft thing is I canāt stop The Major overtaking me, but I had some tricks up my sleeve for a last minute dash to the 1.5M.
Oh well, thereās always another targetā¦get to #1 in the UK on Rosetta
You are not the only one with tricks;) need to pay off the DSL guy in the UK!
You should be able to do it with dialup but it will be painful I am sure.
Well, as you can tell the dial up is working, but Boinc crashes when I connect and Iām having difficulty getting the farm to use the dial-up connection as the internet port via the network router and ICS on a Win XP machine.
Oh well, still a day or two of cache left, so no panic just yet.
As Kwazy_wabbit suggests, I might take a wireless node round to the neighbours house on the weekend (for a bottle of Laphroiag of course) and see if I canāt force a wireless bridge even for just for a series of uploads and downloads. Heās close enough to get a signal I think - worth a try anyway.
@Binlala, aye, the middle of knowhere is quite civilised when all the toys work, but we are a bit isolated when it all goes pear shaped. No gas in the village, no pub, one small shop, but miles and miles of clear skies to clense the heart.
Iāll give the dial-up network stuff another shot with a clear head tomorrow - who knows, the ISP may have come up with something by the weekend anyway. Their 12 month contract is up in the summer. Based on todayās conversations, they will be one customer down when the reminder comes round.
Really do wish you the best of luck nightlord⦠guttingā¦really really bad timeing
:fingercrossed:
Did you repoint the default gateway in the boxes to the XP machines IP address on the internal network?
ICS loves to use the 192.168.x.x stuff
Good point m8, thanks - it was getting late last night. Iāll give it a go when I get home tonight.
Need to try something to keep alive the chance of reaching 1.5M first, but with no further news this morning from the ISP, I think perhaps the the fat lady has stated to tune her vocal cordsā¦3 working days to perform a line checkā¦pah
On the otherhand, just think of the RAC when I get back on line
Well, just as it magically disappeared on Tuesday night, so it has re-appeared!:yippee:
Now frantically re-connecting the network and uploadingā¦the race is back on! I may have lost some processing time on a couple of machines, but hopefully in a few hours things will start to even themselves out a bit.
:wiggle:
You are now back 43K ahead of me! Better hit the gas! :driving:
:chuckle:
make that 49k nowā¦
Question is will it be enough?
I get 12.5 days, it is still way tooooooo close to callā¦
